Nelson for a one or two wk home exchange?
We have just been offered a one to two week home exchange in Nelson. The pictures are lovely. My concerns are two fold: The weather and possible car sickness driving there.
The exchange is offered from late Oct to early Nov. Will it be cold? Snow likely? Cold is okay, a bit of rain all right, but snow NO. Also, it's a 25 hr car ride from So California, though perhaps we could fly to Spokane and rent a car, but is it a tough trip for someone who is VERY prone to motion sickness. I get very ill on twisty narrow roads, within 5 minutes of driving. Thanks very much. |
I can't speak to car sickness, the weather, and I haven't been to Nelson, but I have travelled around the Kootenay region of BC and I think it's one of the most underrated regions of BC, so if you can spend two weeks there, I think you'd be happy.
The towns, unlike most small-town BC, are quaint and charming with a fair amount of historical buildings (I'm thinking of Kaslo, Creston, and Rossland in particular) and the scenery is stunning. The ferry ride across Kootenay Lake feels like you're traversing the Georgia Straight over to Vancouver Island... As for flying into Spokane, that would probably make more sense, if not just from a logical perspective. Late October/early November is certainly crisp and cool. Snow wouldn't be my concern, but it's always a possibility in the higher elevations up in the mountains. Weather is always unpredictable in the mountains though... but if it were to snow, for example, I wouldn't be concerned about it sticking around. |
Thanks, BC_Robin. It's been a while since we've exchanged thoughts on this board. I like the look of the region. The home exchangers sent us some lovely photos. It's the motion sickness that I am most concerned about. I suppose I know the answer already, mts = ms, but perhaps someone will dispell this notion for me!

Rent the Steve Martin Movie "Roxanne" - it was shot in Nelson and I think it stole the movie!
Have you looked at a terrain map on Google? might give you an idea of the roads. |
Thanks, Elizabeth. I remember the movie and the location very well. It looks beautiful. I'm thinking maybe we could fly to Castlegar airport and avoid some of the driving. However, if I wait too long to make a decision, I may very well lose the exchange. :)

i have only been through the region once on a x country drive to toronto, but nelson and surrounds are lovely. the koots are a special part of our province which many of us just drive through rather than linger

Thanks, AndrewDavid. I spoke with one of my former Canadian exchangers, who is from Nelson, she gave me some wonderful and very extensive information on the area. Unfortunately, we were not able to fix a date for the exchange that was mutually agreeable, so at this point, it looks like we won't be visiting Nelson this year. Certainly sounds beautiful and I hope we get there eventually.
