Need help driving though Montreal
We'll be driving through Montreal mid day, heading east to NB.
Looking at the map, I'm planning on following the Trans Canada. Along 20 to 40. Up 40 to 25. Along 25 to join 20 again. Is this the best way? Or are there any 'secrets' to getting through Montreal? |
kodi, I don't know but I recall from past posts that BAK seems knowledgeable about this area so you cld ask him or hope that he sees your post & replies.
When are you going? |
There are a couple of secrets to getting through Montreal.
The first is not to attempt it at rush hour. You will be stuck in slow moving traffic on any route through the city. The second is to avoid Metropolitan Boulevard and the Lafontaine Tunnel. That means your route of 40 to 25 and back to 20. My preferred route is to follow the Trans-Canada (40) as far as Autoroute 13. Take it towards Lachine and follow 20 (or as Montrealers call it "the 2 and 20") to 15, which you will follow to the Champlain Bridge. Continue to 30 and rejoin 20. This is a bit longer than the Metropolitan Blvd and tunnel route but it is faster and every time I have weakened and taken it, I vow "never again" |
Thank you Laverendrye. That's just the information I needed. I figured a city as big as Montreal must have secret routes!
The map I have is not clear enough. I'll have to get a better one of Quebec. I wonder , as I turn down 13, if my GPS will then realize what I want to do? Hi OceanBreeze. We are going Thanksgiving weekend... so traffic could be heavy. |
Kodi, hey, that's next weekend! I will be back in Nova Scotia @ that time so I'll wave to you over in NB! :)
Btw, have you considered flying? The fares are pretty good right now...AC & Westjet. That way you can avoid the whole Montreal thing! |
Actually I guess it's only "next weekend" if you consider the upcoming weekend "this weekend"....but you know what I mean! :)
|
Ocean, where will you be? We will actually be carrying on to NS on Sat as our final destination.
We will be driving for sure. We need the car while we are there. |
Laverendrye, is there a stretch of road before the Champlain Bridge that is not 4 lane divided highway? Someone gave me a trip tik from CAA from a couple of months ago, and it looks like the road is kind of funny in that area. As long as I know what I'm heading for, I'll be fine.
After I get off the bridge, it looks like I continue on 10 to 30. Is that right? The CAA map is very confusing. |
The route I suggested is four or six-lane divided all the way.
|
Thank you so much. I know I'll appreciate your help even more, once I'm through Montreal !!
|
kodi, We will be on beautiful Cape Breton Island! And, you?
|
OceanBreeze, We'll be touring the Halifax area and the south shore area. I'm really looking forward to it.
