MOSQUITOES!!
We are "holidaying" in Nova Scotia between 24th May & 2nd June 2004. Someone who visited many years ago has told us to beware of mosquitoes, as it is terrible. Is it really that much of a problem, or will it be OK if we use suitable protection. I would appreciate comments, as I am one of those people that mozzies "love to chomp on"! Regards Michelle, Jersey, Channel Islands, UK

Not sure how much this will help, but the MOST mosquitoes we have ever seen was on Cape Breton in early August.
I'm told that early fall is best to avoid them, which I know is true for Maine so assume it would be true in NS, too. |
I think it will be too cold from May 24- June 2 for mosquitoes in NS!

That seems a little early for mosquitoes, it will still be fairly chilly that time of year. The mosquitoes can be bad, depending on the area. In the Eastern Shore area they are horrendus in July, August and early September unless you get a good breeze going.

Thank you all for replying!
We look forward to our trip to Nova Scotia - hopefully fairly "bug free". Regards From "The Channel Islands" |
It is wise to go armed and shielded. Those bugs are formidable. When my dad was a military officer in Alaska, he said the guys used to shoot them with 45 caliber pistols. A club might be safer, but it has less range. Barring that, a couple of six packs of aerosol insect killer might be the weapon of choice. In most cases they are more important than 6-packs of beer.
I am not sure if pepper spray or tear gas works on those varmints. You might have to leave the fumes, but I am not sure about the bugs. It will be one or the other, but probably not both! Good luck and good shooting. |
I suspect you may encounter some black flies, which are small biting gnats. This is a little early for them however, and they are creatures of the woods.

We went to the Canary Islands many years ago and suffered from "Cockroaches" - I used to come out of the bathroom armed with two cans of "roach killer" like Clint Eastwood in some cheesey Western! You had to leave the apartment for the evening as you couldn't breathe, so I will definitely "come prepared"!! Cheers! |
I was semi joking. But the bugs can be a nuisance.

I diligently packet "protection" - individually packaged wipes purchased at Magellans.com. Didn't open a single one when we visited over Memorial Day weekend.
