Montreal with 13 year old
 

Hi all. I'm thinking of taking a long weekend to Montreal with my wife and 13 y/o son. I myself haven't been there in about 25 years so I don't recall much at all.

Any suggestions on what to see or do that would keep a 13 year old interested?

We don't have any exact time frame in mind; probably later this fall or early winter.

Insect museum. Bring a magnifying glass, too.

Maybe the railway museum in Candiac, on the south shore.

How intrerested is the boy in good food? When I was 13, I was in MOntreal quite a lot with my father, and we spent a lot of time eating well, but lots of kids (like my 14 year old) don't particularly care.

Regardless, Schwartz' Deli on St. Laurent is an adventure for everyone, and has great smoked met sandwiches.

I asked my two boys (13 old twins) for their suggestions and they unanimously said "bring your X-Box"

Upon further prodding they confessed that they enjoy walking on Mont Royal, visiting Chinatown and eating at buffets. Being 13, they are always hungry, and they don't care about the quality, only quantity.

They eyes lit up when I suggested indoor carting (www.action500.com) near the Olympic Stadium. It also has the usual selection of "shoot them up" activities.

In the Old Montreal area, there are Imax at the Montreal Science Center and the Museum of Archeology and History (Museum Pointe a Calliere)

The Science Center itself is pathetic, but the Museum is, apparently, very interesting.

If you luck out with the weather there is always exploring the underground city.

I think he might enjoy the Biosphere (metro: Jean Drapeau), the Labyrinthe (Old Port) and the Insectarium (metro: Pie IX). Those seemed to be the highlights for my nephews (ages 8 and 10 1/2), since they're interactive or have cool things like bee colonies, walking sticks or tarantulas(e?). I think 13-year-olds would enjoy too (I enjoyed too (37) although nearly couldn't get into the slide at the Labyrinthe since my back was giving me trouble).

I recall there being a lot of old school arcades in downtown Montreal. That might be of interest to them, assuming they allow 13 year olds!

Biodome, Insectarium, and Olympic Tower - all in the same location. You could spend a day there enjoying the three.

Downtown is a fun place for teenagers. If he likes to shop he can probably find almost anything he wants in Montreal. There's also a Laser Quest (laser tag) place on Ste. Catherine street in the core of the city.

I don't know how many of those arcades that were mentioned in a previous post are around, but you could look into that.

There is also the Biodome, it's a lot of fun to spend half a day or so checking it out.
