Montreal: Where to Stay? Downtown or Old Montreal

I'm going to be in Montreal for a couple of days in mid-March. Staying Dowtown would be much more convenient for me, however the hotel that I want to stay at (Hotel Le St- James) is in Old Montreal. I've looked at a couple of properties downtown (including the Omni Mont Royal and the new Le St-Martin Hotel Particulier) but neither appeal as much as Le St-James.

I've never been to Montreal before so I don't know how inconvenient staying in Old Montreal will be and if it worth it. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Montreal (the central part) is small enough that you can,. in decent weather, walk easily from downtown to Old Montreal. I've done it dozens of times.

And Montreal is a taxi-friendly city, so it's easy to get from Old Montreal to Downtown without spending a fortune.

I agree that in nice weather you can easily walk from one to the other. I prefer to stay downtown because there is more to do (shopping, restaurants) right outside my door than in Old Montreal, plus the Metro is more convenient from downtown. To be honest, I would be happy in either area.

Old Montreal has lots of charm, but is fairly small and can be a bit bleak in the winter. However it's not too long a walk up to the downtown unless the weather is really brutal. As others have said either area would be fine. Just to confuse you even more, my first choice in neighborhoods is the plateau area, which is more 'French Montreal' than either the downtown or the old city. Montreal is wonderful - no matter which area you choose you will love the city!
