Montreal Restaurants: Report

Hi, Everybody! Just returned from a wonderful weekend in Montreal. I had asked for dining suggestions here so thought I shd report back. Mitchdesja had suggested Il Cortile. I made a rez there for Thursday night, the night of our arrival. But, it was very cold, rainy & windy that night so we decided to cancel in favor of Zen @ Omni Hotel. Excellent Thai dinner (must have been an "off night" when you were there, Mitch).
Friday we went to La Capannina( Stanley & de Maisonneuve). Another winner. I really liked the atmosphere. This is a family owned restaurant that has been serving Montreal for over 20 years. They could be classified as "traditional Italian." There were 4 of us & we had sole in lemon sauce, seafood pasta, lamb and veal. All excellent. Some has Caesar Salad. It was ok but not great. Would have preferred the "traditional" oil & lemon Caesar dressing instead of the creamy one that La Capannina served.

Saturday night we went to Guy & Dodo on Metcalfe which I believe was another Mitch rec from some time ago. Three for Three! This one was also excellent. That night there were only 2 of us & we had Sirloin steak and Sole Amandine(sp?). Shrimp cocktail & a hot shrimp appetizer. The owner( I think he was the owner) seemed to know every person in the place except us. He went to each table & chatted with each party of diners. To us he merely said "Bon Soir" so we felt kind of neglected! LOL. Because of this personal attention (or lack thereof) Guy & Dodo has a "club" atmosphere. I guess you have to dine there many times to become a member of the club!! LOL.

On Friday afternoon we had a quick lunch @ La Presse Cafe on de Maisonneuve(just East of Peel). Very good quiche & coffee.

Any questions?

It's great to get feedback !! I've only been to la campaninna once, liked it a lot, I forget to recommend it. As for Guy and Dodo,
Guy is the owner and also the chef, so I have noticed that he'll say hello but not chat, when he emerges from his kitchen, I think it's more about being discreet than unfriendly. He does tend to be very chatty if he knows you.
I am glad that Zen worked out for you; I prefer Orchidee de Chine down the street but I agree it may have been an off night.

Thursday was the worst day of rain, I got splashed straight in the face coming back from work, by a car speeding by on St. Sulpice, my hair was soaked, so I can understand your need to stay close to your hotel.

Did you go to Old Montreal at all ?

Hi, Mitch! We did not get to Old Montreal this time. Maybe next time which I hope is soon. Orchidee de Chine was on my list but I ran out of nights. I walked by it a few time. It looks very nice. Thanks for all your help!
