Montreal recommendations?
 

We are going to Montreal after not being there for 10 years. What are your favorite restaurants to go to? We love seafood, Portoguese, bistros, wine bars. One of us does not eat beef, so a steakhouse won't work.

Also, what are your favorite sites and things to do?

For a good Portuguese restaurant specializing in seafood, try Ferreira Café on Peel Street.

There are so many choices. Our favorite way to spend an evening in Montreal is to get a bottle of wine at one of the many SAQ's, and then stroll up St Denis, and along Duluth Street, which is lined with very interesting byob restaurants - many with outdoor terraces. Perhaps our favorite is Le Jardin de Panos, a very lively Greek brochette place. Many non-beef options.
Another very interesting place, especially for lunch, is the Commensal. This is a somewhat upscale vegetarian cafeteria with an mind boggling selection of entrees, salads, desserts, soups, etc. There is one downtown on McGill, and one on St. Denis.

If you like Seafood, you MUST try Garde Manger in old montreal. It's hidden- just a little pink glow marks the spot, no sign. I would definitely call ahead to get a reservation if you are there on a weekend. They have these seafood platters for $35 Cdn that could feed two as a meal, but I wouldn't eat there without getting at least that plus a dessert- to die for! All the mains and sides are great, though, too. It is walking distance to the rest of Vieux Mtl to walk around in the evening.
I love to shop around St Laurant and Mont Royal streets. The Contemporary art museum is nice, and there are always shows and concerts that would be worth seeing. Check the Montreal Mirror for concerts. Music can be enjoyed in any language and there are decent number of plays etc... in english.
I also love to visit the markets- either Atwater or Jean Talon to get some great fresh bread and cheeses.
