Montreal-Quebec City-Boston

Thanks in advance for any input I may receive. We arrive Montreal 10/21 and depart Boston 10/31. One tentative itinerary is:

1 night Montreal by airport
take train RT Montreal to QC
2 nights QC
Montreal 3 nights
take train Montreal (Adirondack) to ???? (this is where I need help...which stop should we get off to rent a car?)
1 night enroute to Boston (Lebanon, NH maybe?)
3 nights Boston

It's pretty expensive to rent a car in Montreal and drop in the US...so that's why the train trip over the border.

Thanks again for any input....I'll continue searching the forums here, but I haven't been successful in finding any information for trips that include both Quebec and the states.

Plattsburgh, 3 hours from Montreal, would be the logical place to rent a car. I'm not sure you are going to find the drop charge that cheap even within the States.

The other option would be Albany, but you would have wasted most of a day (8 hrs+) going 240 miles, and you'ld have to backtrack somewhat to go back into Vermont or New Hampshire.

For your first night there's no point staying near the airport as your train to Québec City will leave from Central Station downtown. The station is right below the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, and there are others in the immediate vicinity.

You could also fly into Burlington VT, rent your car there and drop it in Boston. It might save something on a drop-off fee and train fare. You could then visit Montreal and Québec City in that order, driving from Québec City to Boston with a stop en route in NH.

Thanks so much for your help ron and laverendrye! I'll take a look at Plattsburgh. The drop charge is less within the states, plus the daily rental is MUCH less in the US than Canada. I agree that Albany is too far and would take an entire day on the train.

Laverendrye...thanks for the Central station tip....I thought that might possibly be the case. The flights into Montreal and out of Boston are already booked, so flying to Burlington isn't an option.

Thanks again,

Margy

Margy, have you tried Hertz? We are driving to Quebec City from Bangor, ME in 2 weeks and it wasn't that much $$, and they quoted me "No drop-off charges".
