Montreal or Quebec??
My husband and I will be celebrating 25 years of marriage! We are trying to decide between these 2 beautiful cities. We will be flying in from Chicago in early August. Which is more cosmopolitian? Which has more history? THANKS !!!!

Montreal has both; Quebec has the historical part more concentrated in the core area....
Both would be wonderful destinations for you; how much time wil you have?

Montreal is many times more cosmopolitan than Quebec City, without a doubt. The two don't even compare on that level. However, Quebec City, while slightly older than Montreal (both cities were founded in the 1600's), Quebec City's historical area is, as mitchdesj mentioned, a lot more concentrated. It is also the part of the city that's walled (it's the only walled city in North America), which gives it *more* of a European feeling.

However, Montreal is like a bizarre mix of Paris and New York. You have the smoked meat delis and brick oven-baked bagels, the Jewish neighbourhoods, the Haitian/Caribbean populations, the Anglo pockets, and the unique mix of English and French wherever you go. There's cafe culture galore, festivals going on... and its own unique style of architecture - it's a really special place. Montreal is a very pedestrian-oritned city - everyone's out having a good time in the streets. It's a beautiful place to be in August.

I'd personally opt for Montreal if you enjoy exploring city streets, absorbing yourself into the city, having endless restaurant/lounge/cafe experiences, while having the option to explore the historical Old Port as well.

This subject has come up many times on this forum. As the above posters mentioned, choose Quebec City if you want a mini escape to a small walled French city. Very scenic, good restaurants, almost like being in Europe. Choose Montreal for a big cosmopolitan city with world class dining, nightlife and shopping. If you have never been to either, I would probably recommend QC, just because it's so unique. However you will love either of these fun cities.

Quebec is incredibly romantic. The weather is great in August and there is so much to do at night. It is like going to Europe without crossing the Atlantic. The walking tours are full of historical information about the city. Quebec is definitely the city to get away from all the stress of city life.
