Montreal in Oct
 

going to Montreal for the first time, 4 days 5 nights. What's it like in mid Oct? We typically like travelling in the fall anyway, but we have travelled to the Maritimes in Oct, and Ottawa in Nov, and things seemed kind of "dead" that time of year. I realize it is going to quite down after the summer, but is Oct going to be ok? Thanks.

Things are quieter certainly in October than in the summer in Montreal. However, the city is still one of the most vibrant places in N. America, even in October. Have a nice trip.

You'll have to define what you mean by "what's it like"?

Montreal is never down, Ottawa and the Maritimes are always pretty tame..... If you are lucky enough to have decent weather mid october, you'll be able to enjoy the sights and walk around with less crowds than July but it's never dead or very quiet.
There are no more street festivals at that time but Old Montreal is always buzzing with people....

Another question: we arrive Sat pm and leaving Wed pm, should we spend the whole time in Montreal? Or should we drive up to Quebec City and spend a night there? Thanks again.

Well, you could easily fill that time enjoying yourself in Montreal or you could go up to Quebec City. IMO there's no "should" about it. If I thought this were my only trip Quebec province anytime in the foreseeable future and I enjoyed history, I think I might opt to go to Quebec City while visiting Montreal. However, I think enjoying just Montreal, particularly for those who like a big city with fascinating history/architecture, is a perfectly delightful way to spend your vacation, if you don't want to always be on the move.

I think what I'm trying to say ;) is don't feel obligated to go to Quebec City (it is ca. 6 hours round trip after all), but at the same time, know that you could go and that if you do, it's definitely worth your while.

October is a perfect time to be in Montreal. Try a hike up Mount Royal where the leaves should be changing. It could be a bit cool in the evening but certainly very comfortable.
A trip to the laurentians (St. Sauveur) would be nice. You can probably arrange that through your hotel.

Good restaurants are Moishes (Steak) and Le Latini (Italian)
