Montreal in early December

My partner are planning to visit Montreal in early December. We're from the West coast of Australia, and at that time of year the temperature would be a lovely 25C. I'm imagining pretty cold weather and am just wondering what suggestions people would have for a couple in their early 30's who like getting out and about and seeing stuff. Museums, art galleries, shopping are all interesting to us.

I'm just a little concerned it's going to be so cold that we wont want to get outdoors to 'see' the city. I'd really appreciate any suggestions as to what we can see and do at that time of year.

Cheers!

Hmm should have also put in there that we will also be in Toronto for about 5 nights before we go to Montreal, so any help there would also be appreciated :)
Cheers!

Montrealer here, we don't usually have out coldest weather until january; december can be without snow or a lot of snow, it varies from year to year. Bring layers, a scarf and gloves will make you comfortable enough to walk around with no problem, and you'll experience being outdoors and walking about the prexmas Montreal that we all enjoy. Rubber soled shoes will keep you warm enough.

Montreal has plenty of places where you can go inside and warm up -- coffee shops, restaurtants, retail stores, lots of other places.

While it can get really cold, chances are execllent you won';t be too cold, although it will seem colder to you than to people used to low temperatures.

Toronto is significantly warmer. We keep thinking Montreal is east of Toronto, but it really is a long way north, too.

My web site, at www.briankilgore.com has a link near the top to Toronto tourist info I've compiled. it's messy and needs to be tidied up, but lots of it was written with off-continent visitors in mind.

www.Toronto.ca and www.Toronto.com provide information, too.

Toronto has been full of low-budget Australians this summer, and they seemed tohave a good time. Assuming you have more money, you'll be able to eat in fancier places, and pay for more museum visits.

We've got a shoe museum, if that matters to you and your partner. Ceramic Museum, Textile Museum, and then a big art museum/gallery, and a big old-things museum. Plus a lot of street art. (See my travel page)

If Montreal gets really cold, there is always the underground portion, which is a multi block, multi story 'city' of malls, walkways, plazas and Metro stops. However it is not nearly as intersting as the city itself. Bring a pair of winter boots - if there is snow, it can be very messy walking thru ankle deep slush.
