Montreal day trip

I'm planning a day trip to Montreal, to show a visiting friend around; unfortunately I'm not familiar with the city myself.. I have been there once before and I took the bus tour. This time we would like to walk around and see a few sights (we plan on using the Metro). What are the must sees for a day, that are easily accessible by Metro?

Also any suggestions for some places to eat? (casual, not fancy).. any place that serves vegetarian food.

Thanks much!!

Well it depends what your interests are but I can suggest a couple of things - first check the Fodor main page as Montreal is their featured destination now. I have enjoyed the Botanical Gardens (Pie lV Metro) especially the Chinese and Japanese Pavilions. You could spend a couple of hours there. The Musee des Beaux Arts (Guy Metro) is lovely. Old Montreal (Champ des Mars metro) is full of restaurants, shops and cultural sights - great for walking around and the Vieux Port nearby has lots going on. Chinatown is rather small compared to other cities. Walking on St. Catherine Street or St. Lawrence ("the main") is fun for people watching and shopping. Check main Fodors web site for recommended vege restaurants as most popular restaurants in Montreal are not vege. Have fun.

Le Commensal is a good vegetarian restaurant with two downtown locations:

1726 rue Saint-Denis
1250 avenue McGill College

Buffet style, pay by the 100 grams.

I would second Louis' recommendation for the Commensal, especially for lunch. Huge assortment of hot and cold dishes, in an upscale but casual setting. Other good vege choices - Nil Bleu on St. Dennis - exotic, Etheopean.
Khybler Pass on Duluth, byob Afghanistani.

Gee, having "took the bus tour" one would think you would have noticed the "must see" attractions, or at least those, along with neighborhoods, most appealing to you and your friend. Everything is easily accessible by Metro. There is a terrific overview here on Fodor's and also on Frommer's. For Vegetarian, best is Commensual (sp?), but there are vegetarian offerings all over.
