Montreal and Quebec with 12 year old girl
I am planning a budget trip one week to Montreal and Quebec with my 12 year old daughter late August. I would appreciate recommendations for neighborhoods to stay in and inexpensive B&Bs.

I'd recommend staying in the Plateau Mont-Royal, north and east of the downtown core. Very central with metro stations for exploring the city; this area has some charming side streets (there's been a lot of construction this year here though). Old Montreal is storied and European in look, although I'm not sure about finding an inexpensive B&B there.
I like the Basse Ville in Quebec City, a little away from the old city and prices should drop a bit. It might be difficult finding accommodations in a budget price range without finding yourself in the 'burbs. I'd recommend paying a little more and staying in an area where you can explore the cities on foot or with a foot/metro combo (the ones I suggest will allow this). Wishing you a great time in Quebec's cities! Daniel |
I agree with Daniel for Montreal., the Plateau area is my preference especially for b&b's - there are lots of them in the neighborhood. Here are a few we've stayed at: Pierre and Dominique's, Shezelles, Bienvenue b&b, and Gite du Parc LaFontaine. They are all in a clean, safe area, with lots of cafes, retaurants and interesting shops nearby, and are under $100 a night with breakfast. Gite du Parc LaFontaine is probably the cheapest with a very simple breakfast, but the rooms are very comfortable and clean. These b&b's are very popular with international tourists.
We haven't been to Quebec City in several years, but there are many b&b's on or near Rue St Ursule, which is a perfect location in the heart of the old city. We have stayed at the James Thompson, and the Chez Hubert. |
Thank you very much.!!

Montreal is enthusiastic about bicycles so if your 12-year-old is capable of keeping up, especially when the traffic is heavy, it would be a different way to see the city. Private rentals are available and there is also a commuter bike system known as Bixi. She might need to bring her own helment. https://montreal.bixi.com/

We have stayed at the Auberge de la Fontaine in the Plateau area of Montreal, probably more expensive than the other B & B's mentioned.
In Quebec City a few years ago we stayed at Hotel Marie-Rollet on Rue Ste-Anne in the upper walled city. |
