Montreal accommodations
 

We are staying in Montreal next weekend. I have narrowed down my hotel choices between Hotel Manoir des Alpes on Saint Andre St. and Ann ma soeur in Mont Royal. I think the first is close to the Latin Quarter? Just wondering if anyone has stayed at either? Is Mont Royal location too far from "downtown" for walking?

I know the St. Andre street area fairly well, since we usually stay at b&b's close by. It is a pleasant, quiet, tree lined street close to the St. Denis section of the city. Below Sherbrooke (where the hotel is), it is not quite as nice as above Sherbrooke, but still quiet and safe. It does border the gay village, so you might be sharing the hotel with some gay couples, but I wouldn't be concerned about this. St. Andre is a near ideal location if you want a quiet neighborhood, but close to the cafes and shops of St. Denis and Duluth. I have no idea where the other hotel is.

There's a place called Anne Ma Soeur on St-Denis between rues Rachel and Deluth, one block northwest of L'Express, three or more blocks northwest of Sherbrooke.

I'm not familiar with the accomodations, but the location on St-Denis would be excellent.

Depending upon what you mean by "downtown", you could walk. But, there's a metro stop in either direction, and convenient bus lines.

Thanks for your help! Anyone other pointers on Montreal - what to do or see? Haven't been there in at least 15 years!

Have you been to the Lachine Canal area? You can take a nice scenic drive for miles. Of course go to Old Montreal & Place Jacques-Cartier.

I did book Ann ma soeur in Plateau Royal. Looking forward to getting to Montreal next week.

If your hotel is in Plateau Royal, you'll be in a great, less touristed neighborhood, with countless cafes and shops. Check out Duluth and Prince Arthur streets for interesting byob restaurants with outside tables. You can rent bikes near Parc LaFontaine and explore the many bike friendly routes in the city. The downtown core is just a short hop from the Mt Royal stop of the Metro.

We stayed at Anne Ma Soeur Anne last summer, soon after it opened. As noted above, it's in a fantastic location on St. Denis. Central to the places we like to hang out, and great restaurants within a few minutes' walk. Very nice owners and staff.

Our room was not huge, designed almost like a cabin in a boat - in a rather small space they fit a kitchenette, desk, and a wall unit containing a Murphy bed that had a pop-up table attached to the underside. Fold up the bed, there's your table! Small closet, smallish but nice bathroom. With some planning, we managed to stow away our belongings - lots of luggage, this was part of a two-week trip. Luckily, the wall unit afforded lots of storage for the stuff we couldn't fit in the closet.

Our room had a back door that opened onto a deck. While the deck was technically accessible by other guests, in actuality it was all ours. Nice to sit there in the a.m., enjoying coffee and a croissant, or in the afternoon, sipping a cold beverage after a hard day of tourism. Without it, we might have felt kind of cooped up in the small (though well-designed) space.

Speaking of "accessible" this is one hotel that is definitely not accessible to anyone who has a mobility impairment, trouble with stairs, etc. Steps from the street to the front door of the hotel (which is above the storefront level,) lots of stairs within, no elevator. Hotel staff very willing to help get the bags from the car to the room (and back.)

Despite its limitations, we really loved our stay in this place, and look forward to another one next time we're in town.
