Thanks to you chaps we're probably going to foray into the Atlantic Provinces in the summer. <BR> <BR>I'm a bit of a map freak- larger scale the better. It would suit me if it had the individual house names on. The maps even in the big bookshops here are disappointingly small scale. <BR> <BR>Any tips. Any brand and/or scale I should order on-line from Canada itself? Helpful suggestions gratefully received

I realize that your address shows UK, which around these parts normally means either the University of Kentucky or the United Kingdom. I shall assume the latter because we are not playing basketball. (UK is the best team in the conference in which Georgia plays.) <BR>At any rate, I have gotten quite a few good maps from Jeff King who owns <BR>One Map Place in Texas. He ships to me via UPS. His email is [email protected] <BR>Tell Jeff in an email message what you are after. He has always responded to me with a description of the map. <BR>I have maps of London, Vienna, Munich, Paris, Austria, Germany, the Alps, Switzerland, and Utah that I have bought from him. I think he is reliable. <BR>You might give him a try and see if he cannot come up with something. <BR>However, I received from the Nova Scotia tourist authority a very good road map of the province for free. The same was true of Quebec, along with some good guidlines in booklet form on touring the Gaspe Peninsula. Tell him Bob sent you; I doubt if he will evict you instantly. <BR>

Bob, the Univesity of Kentucky vs. United Kingdom confusion reminds me of when a friend was visiting from England... We were having a beer in a local bar when he looked up at the television to see that the "UK" basketball team was beating whoever they were playing that night. He exclaimed (seriously I might add) "Oh look, Britain is winning!"

I am glad that the great university in Lawrence, Kansas, is usually referred to as KU. <BR>If I had to contend with two UKs I might go off the deep end. (I have not according to my own standards.) <BR>By the way, this kind of deviation from the posted thread is quite common on the European board. <BR>UK is one of those schools where football is just an excuse to have a party until basketball season rolls around. <BR>Who else would have a 300 pound quarterback?? Talk about mobility!! <BR>But he can throw, no two ways about it. <BR> <BR>Georgia is the other way around. Basketball has been better in recent years, not counting the two years after Tubby Smith left for UK, but it has been a long road. When I first came here, I went to a practice session. I realized that interest in basketball was minimal when there were 15 of us watching practice and some of the railbirds kept refering to foul shots as extra points. <BR> <BR>

Hi Sheila; <BR> <BR>Glad to hear you are coming out this way!! If I remember correctly you were thinking about going to Nova Scotia? PEI and possibly Newfoundland. If you are going to PEI they have an excellent web site. It is http://www.gov.pe.ca/ and from there you can call their tourism office for their travel book. I believe it has a very good map in their travel guide as well. Their number is 1-888-PEI-PLAY (1-888-734-7529). If you need anything else, just ask!!

Hi Sheila, <BR> <BR>I think you will love the Atlantic provinces, and NS in particular will remind you of your native Scotland. As to maps, Shane's suggestion is a good one. I believe someone has previously given you the NS tourist website, but here it is again: <BR> <BR>www.gov.ns.ca <BR> <BR>I just got their guide in the mail today, and the toll-free number is 1-800-565-0000. I'm sure if you call they'll happily provide you with a free map.

Sheila, your question got me thinking. I have never seen a map of Canada at 4 miles to the inch like my road atlas of the UK. Then I thought, how big would it be? Well, 875 inches or 73 feet wide. Now that would be difficult to read in a car.

In my experience here, maps from tourist authorities are too small a scale to be useful, but I'll give it a go. <BR> <BR>At present it looks like we may aim for a week in Nova Scotia and a week in PEI. <BR> <BR>A business contact in Halifax has offered quite extraordinary hospitality which it will be hard to pass up. We've pretty much written off Newfoundland for another occasion, and labrador seems to be a lost cause. <BR> <BR>Thanks again all of you <BR> <BR>

Sheila, <BR> <BR>I don't know if these maps are available in the Atlantic Provinces, but all the way on the other end of Canada, in British Columbia, there's a company that creates these amazing map books. They tend to cover cities and the surrounding regions. The details are all there (while they don't print the exact houses, all the block numbers are there, as well are the schools, if the roads are one way, etc. <BR> <BR>Those map books are sold in the local grocery stores (Safeway, etc), the local pharmacies, book stores, gas stations and other such places. I would only assume they would have these style of maps for the cities and towns in the Atlantic provinces as well. Hope this helps!

Sheila, I have gone to www.travelcanada.ca and chosen the province I wish to go to and have ordered their travel guide and also have chosen cities I plan to travel to which supplies a booklet of the city and map of the areas. I have guides for Nova Scotia, PEI and NEW Brunswick. You can learn alot about these areas from the above website
