Maine and Canada
 

We would like a trip this fall, Portland, Maine, Bar Harbor, Maine, St John, New Brunswick, Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is part of a cruise line iterinary, but we want to do driving on our own. We are flexible, have as many days as we need in each place, and could add or delete any cities. Hotels, B & B's, things to do, eating. We want it all! We are active senior citizens!

For Bar Harbor I would take three days including Acadia N.Park,Bass HArbor lighthouse and a whale watching excursion on the catamaran.We stayed at the Bar Harbor Manor.Great place.On your way to St John stop at St Andrews.Very nice.We had the Picket fence motel within walking distance of the little town.What we missed there was an excursion to Campobello island to the summer resort of President Roosevelt.In St John we stayed at the Holiday inn.You need the car to visit.You can take a ferry to N.Scotia.Stay a couple of days in Annapolis royal.Visit the citadel, gardens,drive to Annapolis plantation where it all started.Dr

Great idea - to use a cruise itinerary as a guide. But there is so much more to see than near the ports of call.

If you have the time, visit Prince Edward Island and enjoy the pastoral beauty. Walk along the beautiful beaches and visit with the fishermen working on the fishing docks. Take in a country fair or ceilidh.

During the off season you will not need to worry about making reservations and you should get very good rates in the Maritimes.

In Nova Scotia, hike at any number of places along the Cabot Trail. Walk along the waterfront village roads. In Beddeck, enjoy lunch on a deck overlooking the Bras d'Or Lake.

Some tourist places may be closed after Labour Day, so check schedules for places such as Louisburg National Historic Site. The trade-off is that you will not be with herds of tourists, like the crowds when ships are in port.

I've taken a harbor tour in Portland on a boat that was more like ferry-bus for the locals who lived on the islands in the harbor.

Booth Bay Harbor is well worth a stop.

there used to be, and probably still is, a great lobster restaurnat right on the water in Lincolnville. In good weather, eat casually on the picnic tables outside.

Check the ferry schedules -- I've driven over the bridge from the USA to Campabello Island, and then taken a couple of ferry boats to Deer Island and then the mainland.
