Lunch/Dinner in the Rockies
Any recommendation place for light lunch in the Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff?
Is there a market that I can buy ingredients to make sandwiches for picnic? Any recommendation for dinner? Since I am traveling with elderly parents and they are not keen on big meals, I am looking for places that have a variety of choices for them to choose from. Thanks! Jacqueline |
How about Afternoon Tea instead of lunch? Both the Fairmont in Banff and the one in Lake Louise offer afternoon tea. It's substantial and a good substitute for lunch.

In Jasper, we've enjoyed the Jasper Pizza Palace. They have pizza, salads, and pasta dishes. Either order at the desk, or sit to be waited on. Also, L&W Family restaurant - my 82-year-old mother enjoyed having a wide selection there. For dinner, we've also eaten at the pizza place, L&W, and Karouza's (along Connaught Dr). Earl's is great too, but up a flight of stairs.
In Lake Louise, we have eaten lunch twice at the hostel down the road from the village - I think it's called Bill Peyto's. Good inexpensive food. There is also Timberwolf in the Lake Louise Inn - mostly pizza & pasta - but it is up a flight of stairs - don't know if that would be a problem for your parents. It's good for dinner. There are groceries in both Banff & Jasper for sandwich makings. We picnicked a lot last May - a great way to enjoy an easy lunch. We shopped at Safeway in Banff (& Canmore, since we were staying there). In Jasper, we shopped at IGA, but I understand that that store is being/has been redone, so I don't know if the name has changed. Even before the US$ fell compared to the Canadian$, we felt that groceries were quite expensive in these places. But, it's vacation! Some folks have also recommended Bear Paw Bakery in Jasper as a good place to get sandwiches for lunch. So far we've only gotten great pastries there. We also enjoy having dinner at the Keg on Banff Ave in Banff - great steaks and salads. Try taximike's website for a great list of dining places in Banff. Enjoy your trip! |
I'll add my recommendation for the Bear Paw Bakery in Jasper. Superb and generous sandwiches as well as really, really, good pastries.

There is also "The Other Paw" - the Bear's Paw Bakery's other place, on Connaught Drive just across from the train station.
My favourite café for lunch though, is Café Mondo on the 600 block of Patricia Street (right downtown, the new building with red gables). Great soup, pita wraps, sandwiches, "best pizza on the planet" (sold by the slice, and it is definitely way better than any other pizza in Jasper), salads, etc. |
