Looking for horseback riding and poutin on PEI
 

My mom and I are taking my sis for a surprise 40th birthday vacation to PEI in a couple of weeks. We were huge Anne fans as little girls so we think it will be a fun trip down memory lane for her, plus a relaxing and beautiful place for a girls trip.

We're staying in Charlottetown as our base. I've been doing lots of research but I need advice from Fodors insiders on three things:

1. Horseback riding on the beach for my sis
I am looking for a place where I can take my sister for a horseback ride that will go on a beach. Riding a horse on the beach is a childhood dream of hers after reading Misty and The Black Stallion over and over again.

I've found two places through online searching and I'm wondering if anyone can share any experiences with either?

The first is Brudenell Stables in Georgetown. The second is Circle T which has some glowing reviews and some really negative ones.

Ideally the place will be safe, take us on an easy trail ride with some riding on the beach, and be near a cute town where my mom can hang out while we are riding.

2. Great places to eat lobster while overlooking a water view for my mom
Any suggestions around Charlottetown? I was just on the phone with my mom planning the trip and said, "We will definitely have to get lobster one night." Her reply, "One night? You mean every night." She really, really loves lobster so any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

2. Poutin for me
From what I've read, this is more of a Quebec delicacy, but the idea of fries, gravy, and cheese curds sounds magically delicious to me and I must try them while in Canada.

I'm from Baltimore, home of fries and gravy, and I've lived in Philly, home of cheesefries, but I have to congratulate the people of Canada for coming up with such a great food idea by combining all three! Yum, yum, yum!!

Is there anywhere to get good poutin on PEI? Or maybe somewhere along the road from Halifax to the bridge? Yes, I will drive out of the way for really good fries!

horses...brudenell..is very good. you can also enjoy a kayak experience on the river..

lobster...since your are near brudenell anyway i would suggest checking out the georgetown inn or clam diggers...both have websites...clamdiggers has a great view of the water...u can go to chtown, but u won't forget the gtown visit...and be sure to visit shorelilne design and peter llewellyn.

poutin? ...well, you won't believe it..but try Route 3 Eatery..they have a facebook page...both gals from quebec city and the food is excellent...just had poutin today ... just a side of the highway kind of place...but food is worth it.

Steve- This is exactly what I am looking for! I just checked out both restaurants online and now I'm starving! I really appreciate the insider tips!

You will see signs up around the Island for Lobster Dinners (or feeds as the locals call them) at Churches or Community Centres. Go to one, you usually get lobster, rolls, corn on the cob, salads, dessert, tea/coffee for a very reasonable price.

just don't go to St. Ann's church lobster supper...Fisherman's wharf (North Rustico) and New Glasglow Lobster suppers are much better if that's the type of lobster supper you are doing.

If you like seafood ... don't miss enjoying some steamed blue mussels, and oysters on the half-shell - they're both so tasty in PEI.
It will probably be a little too early for fresh corn, but a good old Maritime corn & mussel boil is a must-do if available.

There is poutine, and then there is poutine. The second Canadian to win the Iron Chef contest concocted lobster poutine. But many KFCs and other chains in Canada sell it over the fast-food counter, which is essentially where it started. Check your cholesterol level before ordering.

Thanks for all the tips! I will have to eat nothing but salad for the week leading up to the trip. We are really excited- we've booked our rides at Brudenell and we're planning a day in Georgetown.
