Looking for a simple hotel in Québec City?
 

My gf and I will be staying in Québec City June 1-3 as part of a 10 day trip from Hartford, CT to the Gaspé peninsula and back. We are trying to keep expenses low. As we will mostly be enjoying the city we do not need much out of our hotel - clean, walking distance to Old Québec City, and a place to park our car. $100 CAD/night would be our upper limit if possible. Any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any suggestions on Québec City in general would be great, too. Thanks.

When we were in Quebec City, we stayed at Maison Historique James Thompson, a bed and breakfast right in the heart of the walled Old Quebec. Parking, while tight, is available. The b&b is located in a house dating back to 1793 and the rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable. Rates range from $57-$87 Canadian, depending on whether you want private or shared bath, and a full, delicious breakfast is provided each morning. The hosts are very helpful and welcoming. When in Quebec, wander through the incredible Chateau Frontenac. You can get a gorgeous shot of the hotel by taking an inexpensive ferry across the river to Levis (think that's the spelling). Since you have a car, travel just outside the city to the breathtaking Montmorency Falls and across a small causeway to Isle d'Orleans, a charming island filled with 18th century farming villages. On the island, you can visit gift shops, art galleries, a chocolaterie, an ice cream shop, buy delicious strawberries at roadside stands, and dine at one of several restaurants serving Quebecois food and featuring live "spoon" music.

I called the Maison Historique James Thompson and they only have one room available for $105 CAD. The man also offered a studio apt. next door for $75 not including breakfast or parking which I may take. Any other suggestions?

I have been finding that places are booked up for June 1-3. Is there some kind of event happening on those days or is Québec City always busy?

I'm not sure why they quoted a higher rate than their website. Sorry about that. Perhaps there is some special event that's driving up prices, as you suggested.

I think the posted prices were before tax. Do most prices on the internet include tax or not? Thanks again.

I would guess they probably don't include taxes in their quotes -- and taxes in Canada are outrageous!

By comparison with the U.S. (but not most European countries) taxes may seem outrageous, but don't forget that non-residents of Canada can get refunds on many of these taxes.

We have also stayed at the James Thompson, it is a great place. However, there are several other small b&b's and hotels in the same few blocks, and they are all quite inexpensive and look nice. Just do a search on b&b's for QC, then narrow your search to rue St. Ursule and the surrounding area.

I reserved a room at the Hotel la Maison Demers today. It was only $75 CAD including parking and tax for a small room with a private bathroom and some fresh juice and croissants for breakfast. It got good reviews here:

Should I expect to pay for this B&B with cash or do most small B&Bs in QC accept credit cards?

Your best plan for payment information would be to contact the hotel directly as they may have changed their policies from the last time someone has stayed with them. I would imagine they accept credit cards, but it's always best to check.

FYI....I just checked this website

and it shows a VISA/MASTERCARD logo for the inn.

Well, now I feel like an ass. I actually found that page before I even made the reservation but the CC emblem didn't catch my attention at the time. The fact that when I made the reservation the woman did not ask for a CC number was what got me wondering. Thanks Richelle.
