Location on PEI

We are currently looking at a house rental in Launching, PEI on the beach. The description says "20 minutes east of Montague and 20 minutes west of Souris".

The warm waters have lots of appeal to me (I'm from Oregon), plus I have an 18mo old and want him to be able to play in the gentle surf. We will take day trips around the island as well as just enjoying our location.

So my questions are.... is this a good location for both warm, gentle water and a base for seeing lots on shorter trips, rather than driving all day to get some place. I know the island is small but I don't want to waste lots of time in the car. If this isn't the best location - is there an area we should look? How will the weather be at the end of Sept (15-25), will it be warm enough in the middle of the day for wading (if not swimming)?

We are pretty excited, I'll be back to ask more questions but we need to get these reservations made.

Thanks in advance!
Sara

The land around Souris is wooded and rolling (I pedalled around PEI) as I recall and is close to Charlottetown.

You will have a great time there I am sure. The pace of the island is slow the best way to enjoy PEI is to take it slow and easy.

The image I have in my mind is Malpaque Bay which is north of Summerside - the best oysters in Canada come from here.

As a side trip, there is a ferry which departs Souris for Iles-de-la-Madeleine Quebec which is a very serene place in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Well Souris is actually about 1.5 hours from Charlottetown . And the ferry to Les Isle is quite long ..... Launching would be a nice spot , access to both south and north shores is easy . Definitely it would be more central to stay closer to Charlottetown as Souris is just about as far east as you can get on P.E.I. . The weather could be cooler for swimming , perhaps O.K. for wading a bit , exploring , etc. but not swimming ! Rustico , Stanhope , Brackley , Canoe Cove , Argyle Shore , all this is a bit more central ...... ( I'm an Islander ... )

We just stayed in Fernwood. It was a lovely cottage with a calm beach across the road. I had children with me and they enjoyed the tidal changes. We did see some jellyfish but all in all it was a great location for a week of touring on PEI.

Thanks for the suggestions - we now have a house in McInnis Point - I hope it is a good location, hoping it might be more protected weather-wise. The house itself looks great!

We are looking forward to kayaking, digging in the sand, exploring and probably more digging!

Let's just hope Northwest Airlines gets us there safely and on time!
