Kensington Market

Have heard that Kensington Market is a good place to visit while in Toronto. Is it safe? What are some good places to check out while there?

All of Toronto is "safe". It is almost insulting to confront that question.
The city is one of the most culturally diverse in the world and a lot of those cultures converge in the Kensington area, with groups shifting in and out as they progress in the Canadian mosaic. It maintains an Oriental feeling at the moment but with shops serving many other groups. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kensington_Market
If you want a "food market" experience, the St. Lawrence market east of Yonge Street will make your mouth water. http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/

Kensington market is great. If you happen to be here the last Sunday of October, you'll catch the last of the Kensington Pedestrian Sundays and that's lots of fun -- lots of street food, music, games, vintage clothing, etc.

If you're not here for that, I think Kensington is best on a Saturday.

Wanda's Pie In The Sky is popular for lunch, as is Jumbo Empanadas. Walk out to Spadina Avenue and you'll be in a thriving Chinatown. For lunch or dinner, my favourite is King's Noodle (north west corner of Dundas and Spadina). Among other dishes, there are great huge bowls of noodle soup with bbq'd pork, chicken, duck, etc. on top. Very inexpensive and very delish.

Really, you have nothing to fear in Kensington market. I practically grew up there -- my zaidy had a store on Spadina -- and I've never stopped going there. We were just there for September's Pedestrian Sunday. I bought a beautiful used summer skirt for ten bucks!

+1 for King's Noodle, great roasted meats hanging in the front window, especially the crispy roast pork or roast duck over rice. In the market area there is Seven Lives for tacos and Rasta Pasta for jerk chicken over rice, both popular and very reasonable. Jimmy's Coffee is another great stop.

curious, we've probably been there at the same time!

Love Toronto goddesstogo, great city! What is the saying, Toronto is how NYC would be if the Swiss ran it?
