It's quite all right, Hydra and Bob, I understand you were just trying to stave off disappointment. Yes, I know the lakes will be frozen. Bachalpsee in Switzerland was all but frozen over when we hiked to it on the first day of summer, and any trail higher than 7000 feet was still closed. So I am expecting Lake Louise to be frozen over in April, for that matter, I am expecting winter. However, I have taken an ocean ferry from New Brunswick to PEI in January, when the Northumberland Strait was full of ice floes, so I wasn't sure about the 'ferry' in Waterton (I subsequently found out the 'ferry' there doesn't start until at least May; moot point in any case, since we're no longer going to Waterton.)

Thanks for the thoughts.

Last summer the sight of a frozen Lake McArther was a revelation. It drove home like no other event just how cold the temperatures are in those mountains.

Rather than disappointing, I found it thrilling. The ice was just starting to break apart, but there were still large sheets of it floating about.

The icy lake had a dramatic and fascinating look to it.

Ah yes, the Bachalpsee. Know it well.
In September of 2000 we turned back after reaching it because of a driving sleet storm.

With the wind whipping up, I was glad the gondola was still running to take is back to Grindelwald, where it was raining!!

Lovely day in the Alps. No mountains were visible to distract us.
