Jasper accomodations
 

Ok, I can tell that we are all planning our trips! Now, does anyone have any suggestions for staying in Jasper? I have read about a b&B on trip advisor,Park Place Inn. Has anyone stayed there? Thanks Kathy

I have not stayed there, but have heard good things about it.

I don't want to knock Park Place Inn. As I said, I have heard good things about it.

However, you may be interested to know that private home accommodations (PHAs) in Jasper cost about half of what equivalent hotel accommodations cost. Besides that, PHAs and B&Bs are sufficiently small that they fall below the tax threshold. That is, unlike hotels, they do not have to charge 6% federal GST or 4% Alberta Tourism Levy.

Because of tax, the Park Place Inn's cheapest summer room, which is C$215.00, would actually cost C$236.50. The same would be true of any other hotel or self-catering chalet in Jasper.

For C$100 - C$150 you could get a very nice suite consisting of a living room, kitchen, bedroom, private bathroom and private entrance in a PHA.

I can suggest 3 commercial places:
Patricial Lake Bungalows
Jasper House Bungalows
Becker's Chalets

Jasper House facilities vary from motel type units to small apartments with a separate bedroom, kitchen knook, and sitting/dining area.

Pat Lake is similar. My son and his family stayed there 4 nights and they endorse it highly.

I have used two of the private home accommodations with mixed results.

The first time, the room was fine. I sent in the money via the postal service in cash (got some from a colleague of mine who is from PEI), and never saw the owners. The room was open for us; they were not at home. We left the following morning without seeing them

The second one had a nice bed, very comfy.

I think if you pick carefully you can beat commercial rates. But the good places go quickly because people return each year and book well in advance.

Highly recommend Alpine Village (have stayed there four times, most recently last August).

We have stayed at one of the PHAs that Judy has heard good things about -- Crayston's. It's only a couple of blocks from the central are of the town and is wonderfully private, with a separate entrance. There is a fully-stocked kitchen, a nice bath, a living area, and a sleeping area with sleeping for 4 -- plus someone could sleep on the futon. We were there 2-3 years ago and it was immaculate. The hostess went out of her way to make sure everything was clean and comfortable.
