In my opinion, it's the best area of Montreal - lots and lots of restaurants (many byob), cafes, shops, bars, etc. Not many museums or typical tourist attractions, but very European feeling. The Sherbrooke and Mt. Royal metro stops make it convenient to get to other parts of the city.

Hi Mari and Wow,
Mari: The plateau is a great area for tourists to stay, it's a fun place, however you are not "downtown" so to speak, you are little out of the center of the city. But whether you end up staying in that are or just visiting it, you will love it.
Wow: St. Laurent and Prince Arthur areas are not considered the plateau. St Denis is "the main drag" of the plateau and the area includes streets such a Duluth, Rachel, Laurier etc

Wow: Not to contradict Layla, but technically, you're right, Saint-Laurent and Prince Arthur ARE part of the Plateau, but are near the western and southern reaches of that district. While Blvd. Saint-Laurent somtimes gets referred to as "the Main" or further north as part of "Mile End" and considered somehow distinct, most people I know would still consider it Plateau. I was surprised to see a delineation go as far west as the rue Durocher (7 blocks west of Saint-Laurent!), which I think of as being heart of the McGill Ghetto or Milton-Parc!
Public transit is great around here (I live here) with lots of bus options as well as metro that can get you quickly anywhere you want to go. The Plateau's big though; where's your hotel?

Here is a link to a description of the Plateau from the Montreal tourist web site

definitely an interesting area to stay and explore with lots of good restaurants. Not sure which of the tourist sites you plan to visit, but the public transportation from the Plateau area is good.

Hey Daniel,
Thanks for clearing it all up, as I native Montrealer I never even realized the plateau covered that area of the city, I always figured it started further north, but hey you learn something new everyday

what hotel did you find in that area ?
my daughter lives on the plateau mt royal and I'm there often; the mile end area merges into it, my favorite restaurant in the mile end is les 2 singes de montarvie on st. viateur street, near esplanade. I also like Cuisine et Dependence on st laurent near st joseph.
it's offbeat and there's a bit of everything.
I love it, my husband hates it, he's more of a downtown kind of guy.
