Is it difficult driving in Ontario's and Quebec's roads during winter?

I'm traveling in December and have air ticket only for the big cities. i'm planning to drive for the small towns like Niagara on the lake, Perth, Smith Fall, La Malbaie...Am I going to have difficulties, like snow or other problems?

The roads are very well maintained and you should not have any trouble.
However, there is the possibility that there will be a storm and if that's the case you will be delayed. If a storm hits, you are better off staying put and waiting til the next day when the roads are salted and ploughed.

I can't think of any other problems you'd encounter.

Mostly, you won't have much of a problem.

But there's a big difference beetween Niagra Falls in December and La Malbaie in December.

I've driven from Toronto to Ottawa on Christmas days half a dozen times, usually through Smiths Falls. Sometimes it is nice and sunny, but I've also travelled through ice storms and swirling snow where visability was very limited.

But only very, very rarely is there a storm that causes problems for more than a day.

Just leave your schedule a bit flexible, and you'll be fine. WHATEVER YOU DO, don't cancel a trip out of worry about snowy roads. The winter in Southern Ontario, Eastern Ontario, the Montreal area and on up the St. Lawrence river is wonderful.

Just allow yourself the option of stying warm and safe for a day, until the snow gts cleared.

ABOUT DECEMBER; late December is worse than early Decvember, and in the Toronto area, we usualy worry about the lack of, and wish for, a white Christmas.

Thanks for the answer... I'll be sure to leave my schedule flexible! Any other tips about Canada activities in December?

Re>Canada activities in December?<

Well, there is Christmas.

This tends to have festivals and people singing Christmas carols and musical extravaganzas at churches and Santa int he shoping centers and most every house in most citiues are covered with special lights.

If you plan on renting a car (which I guess you will) keep in mind that no company that I know of installs winter tires on their rental car. you may thus want to ensure you to reserve a car with all wheel drive feature for more safety.

Just my two cents

If you have never driven on winter roads before, then I would be a bit concerned, but it you have - obviously it is no different than anywhere else. I think a previous post had excellent advice in seeing that winter tires are on the vehicle. Happy Trails.
