Inside Passage Ferry
1st time in Canada. Spending Sept in the west doing the Vancouver - Rockies circuit and then on to Vancouver Island. We (The Missus and Me, both 50 + and travelling from Ireland) are thinking about doing the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert and back. We have the time but is it worth it ?

I took the ferry twice in September and we had on both trips more rain than on every other trip in British Columbia.
You should also consider, that the ferry trip takes more time in 2006, because of the sinking of the ferry Queen of North. The replacement ferry is slower and has less cabins than the original ferry. Also the food servic is limited on the new ferry. Bcfeeris has announced to buy a new ferry in 2007. The route itself is scenic, but fog and rain can make the trip boring. RE: the trip between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. I have done it and, to be honest about it, I think there are better ways to spend your time and money.
We were on the Queen of the North, not the slower substitute. After the first 4 hours of the 15 hour trip I was bored. One mountain side of fir trees looks about like another. I may be the lone dissenter, but I did not see what I expected to see, e.g. snowy mountain peaks and dramatic cliffs. |
Quite agree with Bob Brown-endless rocky shores crowded with small broken trees-relieved here and there with an occasional passages between islands-not at all unique or enchanting.
The Discovery Coast Ferry -if you can get on-is a much better route through the best of the Inside Passage. http://www.bcferries.com/schedules/discovery/ |
Thank You – Tom, Bob and Sam.
I will take your advice and reschedule the 2 days I had earmarked for the ferry trip. Probably spend the time in Jasper/ Banff. Thanks again Folks. |
