Hello

Has anyone stayed in Winsor House Heritage Inn, Wesleyville or the Captain's Legacy Bed and Breakfast? Which is nicer and more scenic area? Also is it worth seeing this area?

We stayed at the Captain's Legacy last summer and enjoyed it very much. Nice room(Captain's Quarters), friendly hosts, and good breakfasts. Twillingate was one of our favorite areas even though the weather wasn't great while we were there. Many pretty fishing villages in the area.

Joan, although I haven't stayed at either of the accommodations you inquired about in your initial post, I did stay in another B&B in Twillingate this past May that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. www.harbourlightsinn.com

Regardless of which of these two facilities you choose, I believe that you would enjoy your stay in the Twillingate area in September more than Wesleyville. The rocky coastline makes this area is more geographically interesting and there seemed to be more options for tourists open during the shoulder season (May & September). If the ferry is still running, you could spend a day going out and back to the Change Islands to view the smaller fishing villages and experience the rocky coastline from the water.

The Highway 330 loop will give you an entirely different feel with its salt water marshes and sandy beaches, although I was disappointed that we often did not have a view of the ocean from the highway. Finding an open restaurant proved to be a challenge when we were there in late May, although I do not remember specifically driving into Wesleyville to look for tourist facilities.

Newfoundland is a treasure and I'm sure that you will enjoy having the island pretty much to yourself in September, just as my husband and I did last May.

Hope you see this reply and thanks so much for the info. We have decided on last week of May and first week or so of June. I really want to see icebergs. Did you get many foggy days when you were there? We will probably stay at the Captain's Legacy and going to Trinity, St. Anthony, Gros Morne. We were in Nfld. 35 years ago, so will see a huge difference.

Joanda, you might still see iceburgs off St. Anthony in July. We had to take a tourboat farther out than it usually goes, but we saw a beauty a few years ago. Just in case you change your mind.

As luck would have it, no growlers or bergy bits came close enough to shore during our time on the Rock (5/23 to 6/8) to entice the boat tour operators to venture that far out, although we heard reports of one off shore up by St. Anthony which was not on our itinerary in '06. By staying in St. Anthony, Twillingate, and Trinity, you should maximize your chance of catching a berg somewhere along Iceberg Alley. Although we didn't get many truly sunny days as one would experience in the Mid-West that time of year, the only time we really encountered fog for an extended period was on the south shore of the Avalon Peninsula by Cape St. Mary's.

I'm sure that you will see much more tourism than when you were last in Newfoundland thirty-five years ago as we noted changes from our only other visit in 2000. The people are still warm and genuine and you won't have any problem finding accommodations that time of year, although I'd still recommend making advanced reservations so that you'll assure yourself of having a bed each night as we were the first guests of the season at some of the lodgings we stayed at last year. My other word of caution is that you may not find a tourist attraction or two open even though you arrive after the posted start date. Last year we scheduled our flights so that we would arrive in Gros Mourne on May 24th in order to take a boat tour on Trout River Pond. When we arrived, a full week after the posted start date as listed in the Newfoundland Guide, we were told that the boat wasn't going out that day as they needed 8 passengers to make the trip cost effective. After my husband and I offered to pay the price of eight fares inorder to take the trip, we were finally told the truth..... the boat was still in dry dock, in the process of being repainted! LOL, Newfie's have their own timeline for everything, so be prepared for some flexibility in your schedule!
