ID for children travelling from US to Canada

I'm planning a family vacation to Whistler, British Columbia, this summer. We'll be flying into Vancouver from San Francisco, and I'm wondering what kind of identification I may need for my children, ages 6 and 10.
Everything I've read mentions a passport, or birth certificate and picture ID. My children have no "legal" picture IDs. Has anyone travelled recently to Canada from the United States with just a birth certificate?
Any guidance/advice would be appreciated!
Thanks.
Diane

When we have taken our children we take their passports. There is plenty of time to get passports for the children now since your trip isn't until the summer, but don't wait around. I would do it now and not have to worry about it anymore.

My sister and her husband regularly drive from the US to Canada (several times a year for the past three years) with their child and only bring his birth certificate, as he doesn?t have a passport.

A birth certificate has sufficed for both of my children. Make note, however, that if you are traveling with your children but not their father, you must have a notarized letter from him giving you permission to take them out of the country.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my message. I will look into getting passports for my kids, since I have time, but it's good to know that a birth certificate will suffice, as well.
