I LOVE CANADA

I love Canada and all Canadians. You are very nice and civilized and have always treated me well. I thank you. I love you all.

Melissa Jun 24th, 2002 07:01 AM

Thank you very much

Farrah Jun 24th, 2002 10:53 AM

When I see msg.'s like this from an American, than I just want to say that I love Americans. Unfortunately Charles, after all the jokes I hear about us, I think you cannot possibly be an American ...

xxx Jun 24th, 2002 12:32 PM

Farrah don't go that far. I'm sure there are some smart and kind Americans. They may only be 1% of the population, but that is still 2.4 million people.

Chris Jun 24th, 2002 01:19 PM

My husband and I enjoy Canada very much. We spent our honeymoon in Montreal and Quebec City, love visiting Toronto, always spend our anniversary at Niagara on the Lake and someday plan a portaging trip to Algonquin Park. As in the US, there is a wide variety of things to see and enjoy. Although we always look forward to those trips, there really is no place like home, no matter where you live and we thank our lucky stars every day it's the USA. I'm sure those in Canada feel the same.

xxx Jun 24th, 2002 01:20 PM

Fair enough Chris.

Susan Jun 24th, 2002 01:26 PM

Chris, that is so true!

Farrah Jun 24th, 2002 11:00 PM

WOW! I have to show THIS to my colleagues. Thank you.

Michael Jun 29th, 2002 08:26 PM

Shame on whoever posted as xxx....it just shows that there are rude/unfriendly people everywhere. Just wanted to add that I love Canada as well. Visit Toronto as least once a year and have been to Montreal. Enjoy the diversity, nightlife, restaurants, relative safety etc. Canada has a lot to offer and you should be very proud. I can't say that I love all Canadians as Charles does as I have had my share of rude comments when the person I am dealing with "finds out" that I am an American. Sorry but had no choice in the matter! So keep your heads held high Canadians and Canadiens!

I think sometimes both Canadians and Americans can read a little more into the natural, but mostly friendly rivalry that exists between our two countries. Stereotypes are torn down one by one as they are replaced with personal experiences and interactions. The day-to-day comments, jokes and little digs can sometimes become rather insulting and hostile-sounding, but when the chips are down, the strong friendship comes through loud and clear. Page back to some of the experiences Americans had when their flights were diverted to Canada during the September 11 tragedy and how well they were cared for by their Canadian hosts. Striking bus drivers set aside their issues and went back to work to support the effort. People opened their homes. Then, try to imagine what the reaction might have been to the more recent, tragic friendly fire incident that cost Canadian lives if it had involved almost any other country you can name -- and then think about why those Canadians were there in the first place. We have strong friends in Canada and it's important to remember that always. From Halifax to Victoria, I've met people who were the salt of the earth in Canada; warm, friendly, funny, often self-deprecating people with solid values that anyone would be proud to call friends. I was fortunate to be in Ottawa last year celebrating Canada Day on Parliament Hill. Not once was I made to feel uncomfortable or like an unwelcome outsider. It was very easy to ignore the talk radio call-ins that might lead more thin-skinned listeners to feel otherwise, if they felt it was representative of Canadians in general. It's not. I keep some Canadian cash in my drawer as a constant promise to myself that I will get back up there again soon. Happy Canada Day to all of our Canadian friends! Long live "the True North strong and free"! We couldn't have better neighbors, neighbour! :o)

Sorry for the long paragraph. I meant to have a shorter entry, but I got carried away. :o)

Susan Jun 30th, 2002 07:23 AM

Jim, you are very eloquent and I second all your observances about Canada and Canadians. My family has vacationed there many times and every experience has been positive. We were in Victoria on Sept 12 last year and the condolences we received were so heartfelt and sincere they made us want to cry. (We did a lot of crying that week anyway, of course.)
To all Canadians who have opened their arms to us in friendship through the years, I thank you. In return, I try my hardest to be extra nice to any visiting Canadian I meet here in the states.

A warmhearted thanks to the kind words by the American posters. To all of my fellow Canadians: HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Kate Jul 1st, 2002 06:44 AM

Well, I guess you will have to add my husband and I to your list of Americans who love Canada!
We travel to Montreal and that area at least once a year,I would like to live in Montreal if I could!
The Canadians we have met have been warm and friendly and big hearted and I look forward to our next visit!
Happy Canada Day~

DELL Jul 1st, 2002 01:29 PM

I live in Dallas, TX and have travelled many times in Canada. I have loved every trip and have found people to be friendly and helpful wherever I've been. You have a beautiful country and have a right to be proud of it, as we are proud of ours. I'm frankly a bit confused about some of the comments I am reading. I have never heard any jokes about Canadians. Only positive comments.

lisa Jul 1st, 2002 02:12 PM

Gadzucks! Ditto what Dell is saying. I've never heard anyone make negative comments about Canada in real life. Only read them on the Fodor's board, where everyone is a target at one time or another.

We've been to Canada a number of times, including visiting Princess Louisa inlet and the Desolation Sound area last summer. It was awesome, in the true, not overused, sense of the word. It would take me far too long to describe our wonderful experiences in Canada. And everyone we met was so nice.

We are ever grateful for our good neighbors to the north (and south and east, if you live in Alaska, I guess!)

We visited Niagara Falls many years ago on a very hot July 4th. Our car broke down. The man at the repair shop went out of his way to take care of us and the owner of the nearby restaurant (The Hurley House, I think?) allowed my wife, 3 year old son and Mother-in-law to spend much of the afternoon in his air condidioned restaurant while my Fater-in-law and I tended to the car. At the end of the day, we ate dinner there and the owner offered to allow us to send him a check for the meal when we got home to NY if the car repair bill had left us short. We didn't need to take him up on this offer, but we will never forget his kindness (the food was good, too!)

I have been a Canadian for 57 years - an accident of birth I am afraid. Oh oh there's one of those anti Canadian jokes again. Fact is folks, Canadians have a great if wierd sense of humour and we use it on outselves most. The left overs we save for Germans who show up in San Francisco with 4 wheel drives to drive over the rubble after earthquakes !! (this is for real) and Americans who buy fur coats to visit Banff in August. Fortunately it's all innocent fun. Glad to have these neighbours. And wish them all a Happy 4th of July!

dnorrie Jul 2nd, 2002 02:51 PM

What a nice post! Thanks to our neighbors to the South for the lovely comments. Happy 4th of July to you all.

Laurie Jul 2nd, 2002 06:05 PM

I too, thank you for the wonderful posts from fellow Americans. I am an American citizen, but have lived in Canada for 22 years (married to a Canadian). I find definate cultural differences, but the main thing is that both countries have such wonderful, warm and kind folks and I am proud to say that I am a U.S. citizen, but love living in Canada!
