How bad is the train noise in canmore??
 

Just made reservations in Canmore for a September vacation. Didn't want to pay those Banff lodging prices. Keep seeing comments on loud train noises during the night. All the lodging that seems to be where we want to be is near the tracks. Is it as bad as I keep hearing? Someone mentioned earplugs - is that gonna do the trick? Got some light sleepers with me. Also, gonna be there, like I said, in mid September - What kinds of clothing to bring. I've seen some must-sees posted, any other comments?

I don't know what to tell you about train noise. I've stayed in accommodation close to the railway tracks (for example, Georgetown Inn), and have not been disturbed by train noise.

On the other hand, someone else has pointed out to me that I've only stayed in Canmore on weekends. Apparently trains are more frequent on week nights than they are on weekends. So I probably don't have a basis for judging what train noise is like on a week night.

We also stayed at the Georgetown Inn in Canmore and I don't recall hearing any trains.

We stayed at By the Brook B & B in Canmore and we certainly didn't hear any train noise.

Hey, Thanks a bunch for the travel tips website - Lots of helpful information. Just curious, is it worth our time to head up to Jasper area? Would probably go for a day trip. Any comments?

Jasper is a very worthwhile destination to include. I would suggest two or, better still, three nights there.

Even if you cannot spend the night in Jasper, it's worth driving up the Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise towards Jasper. You most likely would be able to stop and see Peyto Lake, ride the Snocoach onto the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefields, and then continue north at least as far as Sunwapta Falls before you had to turn around and drive back to Canmore.

We stayed at the Mountain High B&B in Canmore with great views of the mountains and a private entrance. Check it out.

We stayed ar the Lady Mac Donald Inn...right next door to the Georgetown Inn and did not hear the trains, much to the dismay of my train addicted 4 year old! We did see the trains, we were there during the wee, no noise at all. Here's the thing, the entire area was built around the railroad, the railroad is just a true part of the hostorical aspect of that region and there is no escaping it!

You might hear a train. I am not bothered by them, and people in Europe sleep on trains going from city to city.

I am reminded of a woman I worked with who was bothered by everything. One day she complained about a truck at a loading dock across a large concrete parking and delivery area from her office window.

She said the truck had been sitting there all day with the motor running.

I was curious because I had seen the truck but had heard nothing. I walked out and put my bare hand on the hood.
Bad idea. It was a cold day and the hood was like a block of dry ice. My hand actually stuck to the metal for a few seconds.

I am quite sure that the engine in that vehicle had been turned off all day!!
