Hotel-Waterfront or Downtown?
 

We are a group of 8, with 2 seniors and 2 teens, 4 adults. We are looking at either the Renaissance or the Westin Grand, which is downtown (how far??) We like to be within walking distance of several sites, since the seniors can't get around too well. Any advice from anyone who knows the area would be welcome.

Downtown Vancouver is physically very tiny - no matter where you are, you're within walking distance to the attractions. But since the attractions are all over downtown (and beyond), it depends on what attractions you're talking about. Both hotels you mention are located in the downtown peninsula.<BR><BR>The Renaissance is the more scenic location, located right on the water at Coal Harbour, overlooking the mountains and Stanley Park. You're a quick walk into the center of downtown's shopping areas (Robson, Granville, Burrard, etc), close to Canada Place, Gastown (the historic district), the Vancouver Art gallery, and more. It's also much closer to Stanley Park. <BR><BR>The Westin Grand is located at the eastern end of Robson Street nearby the Yaletown district which is a part of Vancouver's business sector. It's a close walk to the historic area of Gastown (somewhat of a tourist trap but it's worth a look), Yaletown (a trendy upscale neighbourhood of high end boutiques and restaurants), and since it's on Robson Street, you just have to walk a few blocks west to find yourself on the most popular shopping street in the city. Nearby to the Westin Grand is the Vancouver Public Library which is worth a look too. <BR><BR>Both hotels are merely a 15 minute walk away from eachother. One's located right in the middle of the high rises (Westin Grand), while the other's more scenic and typically "Vancouver" (Renaissance). I suppose the Westin Grand is better since you're already located in the middle of everything, but at the same time, the Renaissance seems to be just as close. Perhaps someone else can give you their advice! :)

Thanks, Robyn, for the info. Guess we have to decide what we want to be near. Still not sure which is better. My concern is that the seniors can get out and walk around a little then sit and rest which seems to point toward Stanley Park and the Waterfront, I think. Then again......<BR>Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks much to all.

I live in Vancouver, and I would say that the Westin Grand is out of the way for what you are looking for. Have you considered the Blue Horizon or Pacific Palisades on Robson St.? Or the Coast Plaza at Stanley Park -- Denman St.? These are both located on busy streets with shops & restaurants. The Coast in particular is only about 2 blocks from the seawall (for walking along the oceanside -- lined with benches for your seniors), the beach, and Stanley Park.

Thanks, Ruthie. I'll check out those hotels, but I think they're a little pricey. One thing about the Renaissance is that it's reasonable. Of course, I'd love to stay at the Pan Pacific but.......maybe next time. Thanks again for the help.
