Hotel Place D'Armes v. Hotel Nelligan?
 

First time to Montreal for a long weekend in July; both these hotels look attractive; is one more desirable than the other; better location (or are they essentially in the same neighborhood). Any feedback is most welcome--we are two adults looking for a fun, romantic weekend.

how about now? any advice between these 2 for June trip?

I took a look at the Nelligan when we visited Montreal last month and really liked the room we were shown although it was only on the 2nd floor so noise might be a problem. It does have a great location for the old city and it's restaurant(Verses) was good, at least for the small lunch that we had, although I imagine it could be quite busy on summer weekends.

Nelligan report: Bed A, Bathroom A, lighting in room C (very dark!! is the trend with "boutique hotels"). We also booked through Expedia and they gave us a room with a window facing the indoor atrium, facing another room, contributing to the low light situation. Still, I'd recommend it. The breakfast in the AM is about a B+. Location is great - liked being on Rue St. Paul in Vieux Montreal.

The Nelligan would be my choice; the lobby is very friendly, large chairs to plop on, nice bar area, it's like one large, chic family room. Being on st paul is nicer than Notre Dame st., less busy. Although it's very close one to another.
St Paul st. from St. Sulpice to St. Laurent has wonderful galleries and a few specialty shops, the Nelligan is right next to that.
From St. Sulpice to McGill has an assortment of shops, restaurants and galleries also.
I've heard very good feedback from Place d'Armes tough; it just seems like I hear more about the Nelligan, for some reason.

The March 2006 edition of Gourmet magazine has a Special Montreal addition..try to find it, it is so good!

In it they compare the top Boutique hotels in Montreal;Haute Hotels..
the Gault, Le Germain, Nelligan, Place D'Armes, St James, St Paul, Le Square Phillips and St Suplice.

I will give you the comparison here for the D'Armes & Nelligan-
Nelligan-slightly bohemian, delightfully offbeat, for people who love Vieux Montreal. Brick paneled lobby with the air of a ski lodge. Staff-young nd down to earth.
Liked Best: spacious room, being in the heart of Old Montreal.
Like Least: Street noise and hving someone come to the room and show him where the closet was lol.
Place D'Armes:
Tripled its size last year, a short walk from the heart of Vieux Montreal, you can end up in one of 3 wings. Hight ceilings, sllek modern interiors. Youthful buzz never insufferably hip.
Like Best:
Good concierge..Standard Supeiror room was large and bright , not bothered by noise. Next time wants room with balcony.Liked least:
Door card kept malfunctioning, never got safe to work.

We stayed at the Nelligan just a couple of months after it opened. We loved everything about it. It remains one of our all time favorite hotels.
