hotel in Vancouver
 

has anyone ever stayed at the Best Western Sands Hotel in vancouver? Would like to know about the hotel and the location.

I've never stayed there but I've heard it's okay. The location is great. The City bus to downtown stops right out side. It is at the corner of Davie and Denman, a few steps to English Bay, a few more steps to Stanley Park. The Rain City Grill across the Street is wonderful. Denman is really colourful with restaurants and night life. Davie is colourful as well.

I don't want to quibble with Marilyn since it's been years since I lived in Vancouver. However I seem to remember Stanley Park being many steps from anywhere - i.e. take a bus. I loved Denman Street (great Italian icecream shops) and English Bay. I agree that Davie is colourful, but Erica may want to know that Davie is (was?) most famous for the very young prostitutes that cruise that street. Has Davie changed? Or is that what you mean by colourful?

Just back from Vancouver and the Island and stayed at the Sylvia Hotel in Vancouver. I got the tip from this forum. Great spot. Faces English Bay and about one block from entering Stanley Park. The tab was a little over $100 US per night. I was warned the hotel was in demand and might need a 6-12 month reservation. I was fortunate and reserved two rooms with about 60 days advance. They told me they were booked until August, but usually experienced some cancellations.

Regarding Davie Street - Davie's no longer crawling with prostitutes, however it's one of the longer streets in downtown Vancouver. The part of Davie west of Granville St has become a very lively, hip restaurant/cafe & storefront area, basically from the Davie & Granville intersection all the way west to the Davie/Denman/Beach intersection at English Bay. This western part of Davie, by English Bay *is* quite colourful and lively, especially with the tourists and locals walking to the nearby beach. There are many hotels and apartments in this area. Currently, Davie Street is known in Vancouver for its gay population. In fact, there are rainbow banners up and down the street. It's one of downtown Vancouver's livelier/safer neighbourhoods at the moment. <BR> <BR>(As for prostitutes in downtown - they do exist in the night on Davie, however they to hang around on far eastern ends of Davie St and Drake St, between Granville, Seymour & Richards. You'll mostly see them on Richards.

Jackie is right about Stanley park. I misspoke myself. It is a few blocks to the park, but if you want to go to the Aquarium area, you should take the bus down Denman to the causeway entrance. The bus stops at Davie and Denman. You can get off at Denman and Robson and walk from there. <BR>While you are in that neibourhood, there are some good restaurants, including the Chef and the Carpenter and the Cafe de Paris. <BR>Mandy
