Honeymoon in Canada? Resorts, Couples, etc...
 

Looking for info on a great resort in Canada. Open on province, but was originally thinking Alberta or Ontario...hubby-to-be is quickly changing his mind from tropical honeymoon and I'm all about cabin in Canada! I'm excited! But don't know where to begin...

I've only been to boundary waters and no where else in Canada, I welcome all suggestions and am very appreciative of any advice!

ooooh...forgot to mention, definitley looking for a cabin setting, not typical hotel layout, etc.

Are you hikers, skiers, mountain climbers? What are your interests?

Do you want to just loll by the fire and make love or get out and do some things?

When is your wedding? The time of year can definately have a bearing on where you decide to go and what activities you can participate in (outside of lolling by the fire and........).

Do you like archaeology? Fossils, native history?

If you provide some more information, I am sure that someone here can help you out.

You mentioned resort, so does that mean you want to have a handy restaurant and maids to change your linens or you ok with a rental cabin where you don't have those amenties and you make up your own bed.

Ahhh...I suck, I'm so sorry....bit of rocks for brains late last night!

Heading up May 2nd...wedding is 4/30.

I definitley want to get some fishing and mild hiking in, some water sports....if possible, I know it will be chilly still...kayaking, trolling around in a boat, whatever!

Would probably be most interested in a resort setting with several cabins and a restaurant near by...ordinarilly I would want something far more rustic, etc...but hubby-to-be is not quite on the same page as I with all that!

Sorry to be so vague in my orig. post...I tried searching around fodors for other people inquiries about cabins, resorts, etc...but really didn't find much.

i should add that in all honestly we want a very laid back honeymoon...after planning a hell of a wedding in Chicago, I know we're going to want some down time!

And truth be told...we've been living together over 4 years...so there will be a bit more than just some lovin' around the fire ;-) Definitley would be interested in little museums, history, etc.

Also...somewhere close to an airport w/ a small town feel.... hell, maybe we should jsut go honeymoon in my hometown in northern wisconsin ;-)

West Coast Vancouver Island - Tofino/Uclulet/Long Beach is about 6 hours, (Including Ferry wait and time), from Vancouver Airport. It's romantic, secluded, wild and beautiful. Lots of opportunities for fishing, Whale watching and hicking as well. If you want museums and stuff head from there on a 4-5 hour drive to Victoria for a few days.

Early May could still be quite wintry in the Rockies and Northern Ontario. Not a great time to visit either place but the West Coast of Vancouver Island is pretty well the same weather all year round just longer days and a few degrees warmer in the summer over the winter.

I very much agree with Gary A's advice.
Having grown up in Northern Ontario I can assure you that the first week of May is often cold rainy and worse.

Ditto the Rockies-fabulous location but often quite cold with brutal weather changes-rarely for the better.Fishing will for the most part be closed AFAIK.

And yeah...I figured May in Canada would be pretty comparable to May back in wayyyyyy northern Wisconsin where I grew up....hmphhhh.

The Inn at Manitou, north of Toronto, is part of the Relais & Chateaux, which gives you 5 star dining; it's rustic chic- great lake setting with cabin accomodation, thick duvet beds, etc...

The Inn at Manitou, while gorgeous, doesn't open until May 8th this year.
Thinking, the closest Relais & Chateaux open all year is the Langdon Hall Country House & Spa in Cambridge.

Tiffy, just so you should know. Canada is a very big country with a number of climate zones. Not everywhere is as frigid as Northern Wisconsin, especially my part of the country, coastal British Columbia where winter is more damp than cold and Palm trees grow. Just wanted to get that off my chest.

i think the tofino area would be your best bet.
i was going to recommend the jasper park lodge or other cabins in the rocky's but we will probably still be skiing at that time of year - definitly not water sports.
