holiday in the atlantic provinces
 

We are flying into Halifax mid September and have hired a motorhome for our 3 week stay.We were going to do just NS but now we have a hankering to do NB as well as PEI.We have motorhomed many times before but not in this area-my question is(and I know its pretty openended)are there any "must do or see"places or things in NB to save us wasting time just driving around?Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.<BR>Many thanks-Tim

Tim, My extended family is from NB and we all met up there (the Maritime Provinces)last August. The coast of NB is beautiful. http://www.tourismnbcanada.com/web/english/main.asp was an especially helpful website to us. <BR>We loved NS too. Some of us spent time in Halifax while another group visited the country-side. Both groups had lots of nice things to say about their respective "get-aways." In the end though, my favorite place was PEI. I'd go back at the drop of a hat. The scenery in August was spectacular and the people were so friendly. http://www.gov.pe.ca/visitorsguide/index.php3<BR>My advice is to start at one of these websites. The Maritime Provinces really cater to tourists. I'm sure with a little pre-planning, you'll be happy you visited NB and PEI. Enjoy your trip!

Must sees in NB include the Hopewell Rocks, King's Landing near Frederickton, and Fundy Nat'l Park.<BR><BR>There is a lot of great scenery on PEI, although it would be better seen by car rather than by motor home.

My husband and I vacationed in NB in Aug/98. The highlight of our trip was whale watching off the coast of Grand Manan Island. The company that we used for whale watching was "Sea and Land Adventures" (it was necessary to reserve well in advance). "Sea and Land" provided a magnificent full day of whale watching on board their schooner. One of the crew members was a local marine biologist which made it a particularly interesting experience - as she shared information with us throughout the trip. This activity does require a committment of time. Due to ferry schedules, etc, we needed to be on the island the day prior to whale watching and stay the night on the day of whale watching. But, it was well worth it! The ferries leave from the mainland at Blacks Harbour. The trip is ~1 1/2 hours in duration. I believe that camping is available on the island at Anchorage Provincial Park. We had a great stay and excellent meals at the Compass Rose. The innkeeper was enormously helpful. Have a great trip!

Two other places in NB you might consider are Campobello Island and St. Andrews. St. Andrews is a terrific little resort town and Campobello has an international park jointly owned by Canada and the U.S. You can visit FDR's summer home there.

Many,many thanks to you all for replying to my queries.We have taken them on board and have allready decided we were going whale watching(just had to find a good company to go with-thanks Paula)Craig,thanks for the Kings Landing item, we had wondered about that.We are just going to have to take the chance with the motorhome on PEI- dont want to go to the additional expense of hiring a car as well.Thanks "mbp" those sites were very useful.<BR>Tim
