Hip Montreal/A wedding gift weekend

Where would you spend two young 30s hip style conscious urban-boho types to stay
(small boutique hotel or similar eclectic
places0 for a weekend in Montreale -- as
a wedding gift. He's a musician so access to music clubs might influence the location as he plays digeridoo professionally;
she's a clothing designer, both traveled but neither blase nor in need of high-NYC maintenance. Would be a gift for friends who normally come with me to Jamaica, so open-ended gift with this fall (they marry on 1 Sept) an option but not a necessity for timing.

correction: Where would you send rather than spend them (am also open-ended for budget so don't rule out high-end).
Thanks.

tivertonhouse,
although i haven't been there yet (headed there next month), you might want to consider the W Montreal
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotel...ropertyID=1471

hope other fodorites chime in soon with ideas to help you out because you are a heck of a contributor on the caribbean forum (especially regarding jamaica)

MikeT Jul 25th, 2006 05:41 PM

The W Montreal would definitely work. It's a great, hot, hip hotel.

tivertonhouse Jul 26th, 2006 02:31 AM

Thanks for W suggestion -- think it might be too predictable/passe for them. They're picky, so would prefer finding something with more Quebecois sensibility. Any input on?:
Hotel Gault
Hotel le Germain
Anne Ma Soeur Anne
L'hotel de la Montagne

They're more Rue St.Denis and East
Catherine funky than glitz, if that
helps...

See www.didgetherapy.com -- match the couple to the hotel. Thanks.

TobieT Jul 26th, 2006 04:41 AM

Can't help with the hotel but found the website and links really interesting. Thanks!

tivertonhouse Jul 26th, 2006 04:50 AM

The bride is my assistant so am looking for something that sparkles...

MikeT Jul 26th, 2006 10:48 AM

Le Germain is nice and more "Montreal" but the W is much cooler and hipper.

tivertonhouse Jul 26th, 2006 02:56 PM

Thanks, Mike T -- will put both on the shortlist.

From what I read, and what I perceive, I would place the Nelligan hotel high on your list; it has the "Quebecois sensibility" you mention, being in Old Montreal, on the nicest strip of galleries and designer shops, close to nice restaurant options. Cabs are cheap enough they can people watch on St. Denis street, and I know nothing about clubs but they could find out easily.

The W is hip, but it's a typical W, so if they have been there and done that , they won't see the "Quebecois sensibility" there.

dining and lunching close to the Nelligan
(breakfast is set out in the lobby every morning)

Olive et Gourmando, coffee, lunch, best brownies in town
Les Pyrennhées, lunch, dinner
Tokyo, sushi, tempura
Java U, paninis and fries
Hotel St. Sulpice; great courtyard terrace restaurant
Cobalt Blue, seems like a fun bar
Verses restaurant ( in the Nelligan) pricey, always good

Thanks for the Nelligan (was also on the shortlist) and list of restaurants.

I stayed at Anne Ma Soeur Anne last October. It is a very small, clean hotel ideally located, but IMHO would not be appropriate for what you are looking for.
