Hiking on Vancouver Island

Hey guys!

We are two young girls planning a trip to go hiking in British Columbia (not far from Vancouver). Does anybody know about group trips or clubs that hike in that vicinity? We have some hiking experience. Are there any specific trails that you would recommend? Any campsites/hostels?

Dorna + Shaye

Hi Dorna & Shaye,

I'm a relatively young girl too (21) and I'm from Vancouver, so I'm familiar with most of the local parks and mountains. There's some really great books out there (103 Hikes in Southwest British Columbia) - the title is something similar - if you do a search, I'm sure you'd find it. It lists all the hikes within an hour (or a days) drive from Vancouver.

Try asking this on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree too - http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com as there's a lot of young hikers on that page. Just be aware of all the trolls there (ie: people who give false information just to make others mad), though I'm sure you'd get some great recommendations.

You could look up the West Coast Trail on the internet. It is a tough hike and takes about a week and you must have a reservation. All of the information is on their web page.

You don't say what part of the island you're visiting but there is also the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail.
