Help with PEI Ferries
 

We will be travelling on the East Coast in August and would like to know if there is a long wait for the ferries from PEI to NS. I remember as a child being parked long enough to take a walk on the beach while waiting to get on. Is it still this way? Anyone have any tips? I noticed on the website that you can't reserve in advance.<BR><BR>Thanks!

Is there some reason you want to use the ferry?<BR>I was under the impression that the bridge was faster, even if you had to drive longer in terms of distance to get to Halifax by going that way.<BR><BR>

We, too, are visiting PEI in July. We are driving from New Brunswick to Charlottetown via the bridge. After spending time on PEI, we are driving to Cape Breton. Is it faster to take the ferry or back on the bridge when going to Cape Breton from PEI?

Since the confederation bridge has been built, there is only one ferry operations between Caribou (Nova Scotia) and PEI. You shouldn't experience long waits for the ferry. The previous post is correct the bridge is probably faster if you are heading into NB or northern Nova Scotia, however, the experience of taking your vehicle on the ferry is one you probably will enjoy. The highway from the ferry to Halifax only takes you about 1.45 hours. As well, if you are heading to Cape Breton, it is much closer to take the ferry.

I appreciate the replies but ... sorry, I should have said that we were headed to Cape Breton. We are taking the bridge to PEI and leaving on the ferry.<BR><BR>Has anyone used the ferry recently in peak season that can comment on waiting times?<BR><BR>Thanks again!

If they are using the large ferry they will probably take all the cars that are waiting. Most trucks use the bridge so there is lots of room. If a smaller ferry is on, probably the longest wait you will have is about one hour. They have a small cafeteria type restaurant, playground and giftshop at the terminals. Also a great time to talk to all of the other people waiting! Enjoy your trip east!

Thanks Tanya!! I remember actually enjoying the wait as a child with everyone getting out of their cars to walk on the beach there and meet new people. I just want to make sure we are not arriving at our destination in Cape Breton too, too late.

I took the NFL ferry from PEI to Nova Scotia last August with no problems, and very little line up. Just make sure you show up a little ahead of time avoid any large headaches.

Why rush to Cape Breton? When you get off the ferry in Caribou, you will find a lovely little town Pictou. Several spots you can stay there (Pictou Lodge is more expensive but wonderful). Also New Glasgow has a revived waterfront and some great little spots to eat. If you are travelling the first weekend in August, the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubliee is happening - a music filled event outside on the waterfront. There is also the museum of industry in Stellarton or check out the Hector Heritage Quay in Pictou. Some of the best beaches in Nova Scotia are located in Pictou County! Spend a night here. If you aren't in a rush, when leaving Pictou and heading to Cape Breton, take the turnoff at Sutherland's River (merigomish) and it will take you on a scenic route as far as Antigonish. Great drive and less traffic.

I am rushing to Cape Breton to see my Daddy! I would love to explore the beaches in Pictou some day but for right now ... I just want to get home! It's been a very long time!

My husband and I took the ferry from PEI ot NS last July. We arrived 10 minutes prior to a scheduled departure and waited probably 15 minutes to board the ferry. Betty

Took the ferry from PEI to NS on Mon., July 8. Arrived at 8:10 a.m. and got on the 8:30 ferry which was running late. We were the fourth-to-last car to get on that run. Call the 800 number and ask how long the wait is when you leave your room.
