Agree with the border crossing - can be long lineups. You could always take the ferry to Deer Island then hop another ferry to the States or to Campbobello Island and then drive into the States.

Personally, I would skip Bar Harbour and do the US at another time. There is so much to explore further down the coast in Maine - Booth Bay, Camden, etc.

Hi:

Another thought occurred to me after my last posting. On this or another travel forum, there were a number of postings concerning problems crossing the border with a rental car. I don't know if the problems arose in entering the US from Canada or vice versa. Obviously, I don't have any first-hand experience in this matter.

I would certainly check with your car rental agency to see if any additional documentation is required to drive the rental into the US.

Regards.

George: in 2003, we rented a car in Vancouver (had flown in from Montreal) and drove it to the States and back again. We check with the car rental company and they said it was OK. We had no problems at the border or in the US.

we checked...they said it won't be a problem. speaking of rental cars...are the gas prices out east the same as in the Toronto area...$1.03-$1.05. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to rent a green/hybrid car? hmmmm?

I agree with the poster who say you were originally trying to cram too much in. We have explored the Maritimes several times and like to not overthink what we are going to do. That way, if something looks interesting we can stop and not have to worry too much about being on schedule. PEI, NS, NB, etc, each really deserve the better part of a week. If you go to Peggy's Cove, get there early as, around lunchtime, all the tour and cruise busses arrive and the place becomes rather overcrowded.

Gas in NB is currently $1.08 so it seems pretty close to what you are paying in Ont.
