Help with Hotels In Montreal
 

My wife and i are travelling to montreal end of this month. We will be driving from NYC, We would like to stay in the downtown area. I found a hotel in hotwire says 4 stars for $86. I am also looking at expedia where they had the delta hotel in the downtown area for $120 with free parking.

Is delta a good place to stay? And also is it difficult to find a parking place and in general how much would it cost(i am going to be driving there).


Any other suggestions?

The Delta is a fine hotel in a fine location, with a really good deli behind it. As a new Yorker, you should check out Ben's, and do a compare and contrast with NY delis.

The hotel will have a parking garage, and that's the best place to leave your car for most of your stay. Montreal is sort of like NY in that you';ll find yourself taking taxis and the subway (Metro in Montreal) because it is easier, more convenient, and cheaper.

Plan you visit so that you take your car out one day and go see the things that are further away from your hotel. (Lachine Canal, Casino, Railroad museum on the south shore, day trip to the Laurentian mountains, etc.)

Realize there are two Deltas in the downtown area. The one on President Kennedy (just off Sherbrooke) is in my opinion a better location since it's in a more interesting area. The other one is also fine, but is in a more sterile office bulding area. The Deltas are nice 3* hotels. I usually pay about $120 Canadian plus $14 parking. Since Montreal is a big city, downtown parking can be a problem, but no where near as bad as New York or Boston. We generally drive into the city and park somewhere for the duration of our stay, since Montreal has an excellent Metro system. Driving to Montreal is easy. If you take Rte 10 across the Pont(bridge) Champlain, and along Autoroute Bonaventure, you will wind up on University Street which is the heart of downtown.

It's the President Kennedy Delta that's near the Ben's deli, and it's the one I recommend. I did not know about the other one.

joetraveller, $126 seems high for the Delta at this time of the year--do you mean US or CDN$ ?. Hotwire quotes prices in US$, so make sure you're comparing the same things.ALso note that Hotwire rates things higher than Priceline for the same hotels. If you can go the Priceline route, you're probably looking at more like $60-$75 for what they call a 3 star room (e.g. Delta, Hilton, Crowne Plaza)

Personally, I hated the Delta(the one on Kennedy). Good location, but terrible shabby rooms, hallways,slow elevators, indifferent service. It was over a year ago, so things could have changed, but I know I won't go there again

My BF and I have driven many times to Montreal from Westchester. Make sure you fill up your gas tank just before crossing the border. The gasoline price is much higher in Canada and don't let the sign fool you. It is per liter not per gallon. A full tank of gas lasted us the entire stay in Montreal, usually 4 days.
I heard they have a good Metro system but we've always driven everywhere in Montreal. We found all the places within easy reach distance, usually not more than 15-20 minutes away from our hotel and driving is far less stressful in Montreal than in NYC.
Parking has never been a problem for us in Montreal. There're only two occasions we had to wait for a parking spot and it only took 5 minutes before a space became available, far less wait than in NYC. We have always parked our car in the hotel garage and valet parking with unlimited in and out privilege costs anywhere from lower to higher $20 CN a day depending on the hotel and self parking is only a few dollars less. There are probably other options that cost less but we haven't looked into it.
When comparing hotel prices also take into account whether you get part of the taxes refunded to you. Booking with Expedia isn't eligible for the tax refund but booking at other websites may be. Look into it when you book your hotel.
We will be going to Montreal again in early April after Easter and will be looking for a hotel soon. If you decide to go with the one in hotwire would you share some info.? Thanks! in Montreal!

Stayed at the Delta for five nights in January for $29 a night through Priceline. I had a huge room on the 11th floor, nicely decorated and very clean. Staff was very nice, the elevators were no problem, and the location was terrific. I was worried as I had read other reviews indicating that the rooms were a bit shabby, but I believe there were renovations last year. I was very pleased!
