Help with 11-Day East Coast Itinerary

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice.

My family and I (wife and two teenage boys) will be flying to the East Coast from Toronto for the first time this summer. We have 11 days total. The primary purpose of our trip is to check out Mount Allison University in Sackville NB, and Acadia in Wolfville – two schools my son is considering applying to next year. We know the school tours will take about 1/2 day each so we'd like to plan a route whereby we can also see the highlights of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and possibly PEI. We can either fly into Moncton and see Mount Allison first and Acadia second, then fly home from Halifax or the reverse. We'll be renting a car for the duration.

My two questions are this. First, I've heard such great things about The Cabot Trail/Cape Breton AND PEI but I don't think we have time to see both properly. I'm sure they're very different but if you had to pick, which would you visit? Or if you think I can do both (and not too rushed), please let me know.

Secondly, can anyone suggest a great itinerary given the requirement of seeing two universities and all the other attractions?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

With thanks,
Oren

Hmmmmmmm, given what you mention as your necessities, I would surely fly into Moncton and out of Halifax (if it isn't cost prohibitive to do so).

Because you can check-off your Sackville school so relatively quickly, you should probably land in Moncton, and first visit Hopewell Cape, NB before then heading to Mount Allison.

My instincts are battling one another, for I see merit in getting to the other school fairly early on the trip (to make sure you can give it its due, and for more clarity when your son is comparing the two)... YET Wolfville is in sort of an awkward spot for any sort of a direct path during your journey (the two schools are about 56 miles apart, yet require 172 miles of driving to get from one to the other on the quickest path).

(still puzzled) Maybe you use the awkward placing of the two to do some additional sightseeing... taking the path from Truro via Maitland and Tennycape... being sure to visit Burntcoat Head, home of the world's highest tides, along that path.

Then, on the rebound from Wolfville, take the path through Halifax and maybe use the opportunity to look around and familiarize yourselves for any time you'll have there before flying out at the end of your trip.

SO, 11 days...

nights spent in :

1) Moncton / Hopewell Cape area (depending upon arrival and tide times, etc) (ideally you'd see Hopewell Cape at both high and low tides - low is the clear priority if you can only see it once)

2) Sackville area

3) Wolfville area (ponder hiking to nearby Cape Split if interested)

4) Maybe Halifax area (shrug??)

5 & 6) (maybe 7 as well?) at/near Baddeck, NS

(Cabot Trail on one of those days)

8) Maybe Pictou, NS ??

9 & 10) Halifax area, perhaps with a side-trip to Peggy's Cove and/or Lunenburg

It would probably do you all some good to have an enhanced sense of the nearby areas IF indeed the son selects one of the two schools.

Just my thoughts...
