Help on Vancouver and Victoris

We are taking a Holland American cruise in August to Alaska and want to stay in Vancouver for 2 days before. We have heard a lot about Victoria, but are requesting advice and information about places to stay. How long is it to Victoria? Just where do the cruises to Alaska and the ferry to Victoria leave from? How long is the trip to Victoria? Is the Best Western Sands a convenient place to stay? Any other advice about places to visit and eat would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

The ferries to Vancouver Island and Victoria (2 route choices) leave the mainland from terminals some distance from central Vancouver. Travel time from one city to the other takes at least 3 hours, possibly longer depending on ferry traffic. There are float plane services from one waterfront to the other, though, very scenic and fun, but not cheap.
The cruise ships leave from central Vancouver, not near the Victoria/Vancouver island terminals.
The Sands is a comfortable enough motel/hotel very well located across from English Bay. Plenty of good shops and restaurants nearby, convenient to Stanley Park, a highlight of a visit to Vancouver.
