Banff voyageur inn (555 Banff ave, i think) had great rates when we went recently.. $50/night. ask for room with the view of the brick wall. i'm not kidding. The rooms were neat and clean. there is a attached dining area which was not too bad either.

have a great trip!

Doesn't get much cheaper than the Banff Hostel....not sure of the address, but its on the way to the Banff Springs, on your left near the Elkhorn Lodge.

As for places to eat, there's lots of pubs and taverns that serve the essentials at reasonable prices.

Enjoy!

The hostel on Otter St. is about $24/night. It's very clean and secure. Bring a lock to lock up your kit in your room (you share a room with 3 other people). www.hihostels.com

there is a trolley that runs a direct route thru the town for the cost of $1 per ride and it goes right to the hostel. The cheapest place to eat is to buy groceries. The hostel has a kitchen where you can prepare your own food.
I hope this helps!
It was quite a few years ago, but I stayed at the "Y" and was very happy. I had a private room, very large, plain but certainly clean and comfortable. And I had a grat view of the mountains from my window , which was a real bonus.
Good luck.
