Heading East from Toronto please help
My family and I are planning a 2 week vacation at the end of July leaving Toronto to Vermont, New Hampshire,Maine, New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia and finally NFLD. Anything we shouldn't miss? ALso after New Brunswick what order do you recommend we do the maritime provinces ending in NFLD. THanks a bunch.
I'd say your plans are far too ambitious to do justice to any of these states/provinces or even enjoy the journey on such a whirlwind tour. If you only have 2 weeks my advice would be -- either spend it exploring VT/ NH/ MA or the maritimes provinces, or Newfoundland. Any of these areas is worthy of 2 weeks .. or longer., as there are so many possibilities. If "family" includes children, calculate how many hours you will be spending inside your vehicle and whether you want your vacation sights to consist of highway rest stops and the inside of hotel rooms where you crash exhausted and cranky.

I tend to agree that you've got a lot to see in not a lot of time.

but, should you choose to go ahead...i suggest from NB, you take the bridge to PEI and then come back on the ferry to NS. it puts you in a good position to either head out toward cape breton and to the ferries to NFLD or to head down to halifax.

hth
JP

We go to Cape Breton every summer from Toronto and find it very difficult to see what we want to see - and I'm from there!!

We drive to 10-12 hour days stopping overnight in Maine or New Hampshire. It's a whirlwind. I have to agree with the other posters about selecting one of these areas and concentrating on it.

BTW, we have no kids and there are still some crankies by the time we finish the second day of driving.

Another vote for "Too Far."

But anyway, I like to take the ferry across lake Champlain to Burlington, Vermont. The town of Lake Placid is good for an hour's walking around and the purchase of an ice cream cone afgter a boring drive across New York State through woods.

Best cheap tourist treat in Maine is the "bus" boats on Casco Bay in Portland. These take local residents to homes on various islands, but can give you a great tour, for very little money.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine, is worth a visit, as is Bar harbor. Get up very early and enjoy the sun rise in Acadian national park, beside Bar Harbor.

Try to time your trip so you go through Lincolnville, Maine, at mealtime, and stop at the Lobster Pound restaurant, and eat outdoors, on the picnic tables.

As for Newfoundland; remember that it is a very long drive across the province to get from the ferry terminal to St. John's. Newfoundland is a wonderful place and it gives mainland children a new perspective on the country, but it really is a long way from Toronto by car, if you want to stop and see other things on the way.

BAK
