Have you been to Duncan?

If so, let me know what your impressions were. I'm thinking of making this a day trip to see the totem poles, BC Forest Discovery Centre and Quwutsen (sp?) Cultural Centre. Is this too much, too boring...? Also, and suggestions on where to eat with 3 kids would be welcomed.

You asked. I think it's one of the dullest places around - a place to get through to go somewhere else.

Be sure to slow down and admire the 'Worlds largest hockey stick' on the arena as you pass through.
Places to eat with three kids?
There is a Macdonalds and a Wendy's on the highway.
There are totem poles in Victoria next to the museum in 'totem park' and a tall one in Beacon hill park.
Ah yes, the hockey stick! Well, the BC Forest Discovery Centre might be interesting. It had a small train you could ride on.

Otherwise I think a trip to the museum in Victoria would be more interesting and educational than a visit to Duncan. As mentioned there are totem poles outside and in, plus the old western town, the forest, the ship, waterwheel, fish cannery, etc., etc., and the IMAX.

Also, it might be worth seeing if anything is going on at the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society, which has a site beside the Pat Bay Hwy between Victoria and Sidney.

We stopped there for breakfast on our drive to Victoria. I wouldn't bother ever going back. If you want to see totem poles, Stanley Park in Vancouver has a nice display.

I agree Duncan is a place to drive thru - on your way to Chemainus [nice little tourist trap] then up to Parksville, Coombs then out to Long Beach [2-3 days min] book ahead
Have Fun

Hi Catherine,
I just couldn't let this post go by. Duncan has a small (hidden) main street, off the highway, with at least one excellent casual restaurant called "Gossips" with great veggie and fresh choices. I wouldn't hesitate to take my daughters (9,11) there and have lots of choices. There is also a wonderful bookstore (kids section and adults), kitchen store, and other shops on the same street. The native centre is interesting, and the Discovery Centre is a school field trip destination, although it has been closed due to a labour dispute (???). Call first. Main street Duncan is a hidden gem. We go over quite regularly from Sidney.

Debra - thanks for the info, it helps. I hope the Discovery Centre won't be closed as I thought my kids would enjoy it. I'm trying to pack as much educational stuff in a fun way into this trip. Determined not to let it be what I call a "plastic" trip: all McD's and malls!
