Has Ottawa Changed much?
 

Hi All,

I lived in Ottawa about 20 years ago and have not been back but would like to. I used to live in an area called Tren Village / Arlington Woods which is in Nepean.

1st off are these places still there and still a quiet suburb?

Second have there been many changes to the city that would be worth seeing?

Have there been many changes to the city worth seeing? Well, yes.

In the past 20 years, four galleries/museums have moved to stunning new buildings: The National Gallery, the Museum of Civilization, the Canadian War Museum, and the Aviation Museum. They are among the top visitor attractions in the Ottawa/Gatineau area (Hull is now part of the amalgamated city of Gatineau, as Nepean is now part of the city of Ottawa). These are places not to be missed.

The Byward Market has changed quite a bit, as more restaurants, boutiques and bars have moved in. The market stalls and food shops are still there, but it's now a much more diverse area.

On the whole, the restaurant scene in the Ottawa area has improved immensely in the past 20 years, with a great variety of cuisines and interesting places to eat.

Trend Village/Arlington Woods is still there and still a quiet suburb, although the city has expanded well beyond the green belt in the east, south and west.

I lived in Trend Village while Arlington Woods was being developed.

While Trend Village itself has not changed much, the traffic on Greenbank Road (which is now 4 lanes with a traffic light at every intersection) and the lack of grren space anywhere on Greenbank until you hit almost Fallowfield Road is noticable. This is now major 'burbs verging on city.

As well, we have a major east-west thoroughfare now (extension of Hunt Club road) which runs from Tremblay road in the east of Ottawa to Richmond Road in the west.

In short, TV will not be much changed, but everything about getting into and out of TV will be.

On a positive note - that means that there are a whole whack of home delivery places available to the TV burbs now - LOL!

me too ... I was in school then Knoxdale and Greenbank so still young (sighs) those were the days :)

Wow it was 2 lanes running up past Macs Milk and Green Bank Grocer. There was like, nothing on either side of it but corn and erm think there was supposed to be melon fields. I think it ran up to the Jock River? Remember fishing in there with my dad :)

Yes it was more in development in my day.

Hmm bit of a change. I imagine you will have seen it when it was a village :) almost like myself.

Nice! Thanks so much for bringing me up to date. Would like at some point to visit again as when you look as an adult thing might not be quite what you remember then as when you were a child.

The Ottawa Roughriders are long gone (1996) as are their successors, the Renegades (folded this spring). There's no more CFL football in Ottawa, although the CEO of Steelback beer has been making noises about resurrecting a team.

Is there any chance that I was your teacher? My first year of teaching was in 1968/69 at Knoxdale Public School teaching grades 5 and 6!!!
