Happy Birthday Edmonton!!!

Edmonton, the beautiful capital city of Alberta, celebrated its centennial - 100 years since incorporation - on October 8th. There are a lot of birthday celebrations going on at the moment, including free admission to many of the city's attractions (Fort Edmonton Park, John Jantzen Nature Centre, Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton Art Gallery, etc. etc.).

My family moved to Edmonton from Europe many decades ago, when I was just a wee lass. At the time, I couldn't believe that my parents would bring us to such a place - so far away from everything that it seemed to be at the end of the world. Now I wouldn't live anywhere else :-X !!

Happy Birthday Edmonton ((^))!!!

Greetings and felicitations, Edmontonians!

You lucky guys, you're having a DOUBLE celebration this weekend. ((B))

I was fortunate to have visited Edmnonton this summer.

100 yrs old is actually pretty young as cities go.

Yes Dick, you are right - 100 years is really young.

But consider that 150 years ago there was no city, just a fort on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, in a region of aspen parkland bordering the prairie at the southern edge of the boreal forest (Fort Edmonton - the actual wooden fort - is now located in a historical village a.k.a Fort Edmonton Park).
Note that - just 112 years ago, in 1892, Edmonton was incorporated as a town with a whopping huge population of 700 people.
Since then, it has grown into a booming metropolis of nearly one million people.
Considering the climate here, this is pretty amazing and worth celebrating.

Forgot to mention - this coming Friday (the 15th) there is going to be a cattle drive through the streets of downtown Edmonton!! This should be a very interesting sight!! (it apparently kicks off the rodeo season - no pun intended). 3:O

What a lovely post Borealis, I wouldn't live anywhere either!!

Well, possibly New York for 6 months, but I know I would miss my prairie home and our Rocky Mountains.
