Halifax, Where to Stay?

We have 3 days in Halifax in Sept.....any accommodation suggestions at reasonable prices? We want to be fairly close to the touring areas. Would like a B & B but they are so strict on cancellations.

We prefer staying in B&Bs but we wanted to be near the waterfront in Halifax and I couldn't find a convenient B&B. So, I used priceline to bid for the top of the line hotels (5 star maybe?) after researching that the 3-5 top hotels were all where we wanted to be. I did some research on prices, and was accepted for $75 (US) at the Marriott Harborfront. Of course, we paid for parking overnight, but the location was great. Oh, and this was last August.

The B&Bs in Halifax tend to be further away from the downtown area, with mostly the larger chain hotels in the downtown core. If you didn't want to go with artsbabe's Priceline suggestion, I'll suggest Fresh Start B&B (pretty close to downtown, not really walkable but very handy to a number of buses that would get you downtown quickly). I've not stayed there but have seen inside during a couple of Christmas parties and it's a tastefully restored older house with lots of original details and antiques.

Closer to downtown (and walkable to all the major sites) would be the Waverley Inn on Barrington Street (again, I've not stayed there but friends often use this small hotel when in town).

If you can get the Marriot for a good price do it. The Atlantica is a nice hotel not right on the water but very convenient and sometimes they have specials too. Check on Travelzoo for deals.
