Halifax area - Reliable lobster place?
 

I'm still looking for a place to get great lobster, at a fair price in the Halifax area. I've been disappointed with Salty's - chewy lobster, high price. I'm back again at the end of July - any suggestions?

The Five Fishermen, may be a tad pricey but you get what you pay for. Otherwise, head over to Eastern Passage, walk along their boardwalk and see if any lobster deals are on...although I would not recommend Boondocks at all.

I asked a Halifax woman the same question two weeks ago, and she said, in all seriousness, that I should go to Prince Edward Island and go to one of the church lobster suppers.

In all my trips to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, I never found anywhere like the "lobster in the rough" restaurants such as in Lincoln, Maine, and down at Abbott's in Mystic, Conn.

By "lobster in the rough" I'm talking about a fresh boiled lobster, cooked while you wait, served on a paper plate, perhaps with a carboard bucket of clams on the side, and a paper cup of melted butter. Often eaten at picnic tables, perhaps indoors, even better outdoors, and best of all within a few feet of salt water.

And, as I think of this, downtown Glouchester, Mass, right down by the docks where you can actually touch a fishing boat while seated at the table.

Did you check out Historic Properties - John's Seafood? There is also a place on Grafton st. offering traditional lobster suppers with music. I can find out more for you.

We're only in Halifax for 3 days this trip, so PEI is out of the question, unfortunately.

You can always take a day trip out to Hall's Harbour and enjoy your lobster on the wharf the traditional way - on a picnic bench without all the fancy silverware!

Again, I would recommend John's Seafood in Historic Properties. Right on the water - although it is not table service.
