Halifax and Cape Breton Camping
 

We plan to go camping in Halifax and Cape Breton in late August and I'd like to get suggestions on really nice campgrounds in these areas. We have a tent trailer and we prefer wooded campgrounds. We'd rather stay away from campgrounds with hardly any trees and with RVs lined up. Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Hi: There are two National Parks in NS:the largest, Cape Breton National Park, and the other down south, Kejimkujik (say that 3 times real fast!). You can find all you need to know about them on Parks Canada website. My suggestion is to make reservations online (if possible) for sites in both places, or call. "Keji" is about 2 hours southwest of Halifax and is a wonderful park. In fact, canoeing really got its start in Canada (according to some experts) right in this area. There is great flat water canoeing in the park (canoe rentals available) as well as easy hiking trails. Lots of trees! I've no suggestions on Cape Breton National Park, though others may have.

As for Provincial Parks, there are quite a number of them on NS. I think I've read somewhere that some are run by private proprietors, but I might be worng about that. Again, going to Parks Canada provides information on each of them, which should be helpful to you in planning. Have a great time!

We live in N.S. and have done LOTS of camping,though always in a tent.And we too like wooded sites and not Rv parks!
We always stay in prov. and Nat. parks,thoughyou might find they don't have water and power hook ups for you,but I'm not sure.In Cape Breton we prefer the Cheticamp side of the Nat. park.Large sites,very private,beautiful campground and Cheticamp is only about 5-10 min.drive and has everyting you need.The Nat. park in C.B. is awesome!!Be sure to make it Ingonish beach on the other side, beautiful ocean beach for laying on,and a 3 min walk to the lake for swimming!
I find Keji.'s sites kinda small and it's a VERY busy spot,wonderful lake for swimming and canoeing/kayaking.
About a hour away is Thomas RaddaLL PROV. park.This is the BEST park in the province!!Six different beaches,huge wooded sites,clean washrooms,ocean side trails, our favorite!
Be sure to get the Nova Scotia guide book "Doer's and Dreamers" we always find our tourism book to be the best!(though we might be a little biased!

We have camped annually since '95 at a place in Cape Breton called the "Hideaway", near Dingwall. Most sites are quite wooded and certainly private enough for us to feel very comfortable in a tent. It's privately owned, and I think it was just opened in 1995. There have been continuous improvements made since then, including a diswashing station, a laundy area and more private showers. A few cabins are being built every year. It has breathtaking views of Aspy Bay. We have enjoyed all of our time there. On the downside, there doesn't seem to be many serviced sites for a trailer, but it shouldn't be a problem if you book ahead of time.
